Each spring, the Mass Communication Department recognizes student achievements, distributes scholarships, and honors alumni, donors and friends of the program. For many years, the event has been a banquet held during the last week of school.
Originally hosted by members of the Media Club, the banquet was held in the Clark Student Center and included a spoof Wichitan, gag gifts for the faculty, and program speakers who made interesting and satirical comments about the department.
Over the years, the event has evolved, and students in the Public Relations Campaigns class planned and implemented the banquet for the first time in 2008. Under the theme “Lights, Camera, Dinner!” they tied the event to the screening of the graduating seniors’ documentaries for the Senior Production course.
The PR Campaigns class also handled the 2009 event, held in conjunction with the documentary screenings and incorporating the department’s 25th anniversary: “A Silver Celebration for Mass Communication.” For the first time, the department presented an Outstanding Alumnus Award at this event and also received anniversary resolutions from the City of Wichita Falls and the Texas House of Representatives.
Public relations students, scholarship recipients, and alumni volunteers were the event organizers for the May 2010 event.
