Title: Library Assistant III
Description: Performs very specialized library work involving performance of quasi-professional duties. Work requires the application of an extensive knowledge of standard library routines and the performance of limited professional library duties. Employees in this class work under professional supervision, and duties are performed in accordance with established library procedures and policies. Employees in this class may supervise several other employees. This class differs from Library Assistants I and II in the type and amount of professional work performed and in the degree of supervision provided.
Examples: Responsible for verification of invoices in accordance with library policies and state laws and regulations. Responsible for assembling and preparing materials for the binder. Organizes the reserve collection. Oversees the checking in of new books. Performs preliminary descriptive cataloging of monographic material. Searches standard reference tools and library guides in assisting faculty and students. Supervises a service area when a professional is not available. Supervises daily routines at circulation reserve desk. Supervises the keeping of complex library records and submits required reports in acceptable form.
Physical Condition:
Experience: One year of experience in general office and clerical work.
Knowledge: Ability to supervise a limited area of library operations without immediate supervision. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library personnel, faculty, students, and other library patrons. Ability to keep and to supervise the maintenance of complex records and to submit required reports. Ability to plan, assign, and coordinate the work of Library Assistants and student assistants.
Education: Bachelorís degree. Two years of college or research library experience.
Additional Requirements: Knowledge of OCLC and other library management systems. Knowledge of Library of Congress cataloging rules. Able to organize materials, type, use computer applications. Keep abreast of cataloging rules changes and cataloging subject heading changes. Good organizational and supervisory skills (student employees). Some moderate lifting required. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
