Title: Accountant III
Description: Performs complex professional accounting work with some administrative responsibility. Work involves supervision of professional and clerical workers preparing, posting, and balancing financial records or operating reports. Works under direction of the Controller with wide latitude for independent technical judgment in work accomplishment. Responsible for interpreting policy and department procedure into work assignments, and maintaining an effective accounting control system.
Examples: Interprets policies and restrictions in work planning. Plans, assigns, and supervises work of technical and clerical workers preparing accounting documents or operating reports, posting to permanent controls, and balancing the permanent records. Supervises or assists in taking trial balances and preparing financial statements with necessary schedules and exhibits. Periodically spot-checks or audits accounting or control records for accuracy and conformance to established standards and procedures. Acts as consultant on accounting matters to administrative, supervisory, or technical workers. Gives technical assistance to subordinate workers in handling unusual or complex accounting transactions and trains personnel in new procedures or methods. Performs related work as assigned.
Physical Condition:
Experience: Requires more than three years responsible experience in accounting and business management with some administrative and supervisory responsibility. Should have considerable background in fund accounting.
Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of acceptable accounting procedures, office practices, and state laws governing maintenance of accounting records. Ability to supervise accounting personnel and interpret and apply accounting theory to difficult or complex transactions.
Education: Graduation from an accredited senior college with major courses in accounting and business management. Bachelorís degree in Accounting is preferred.
Additional Requirements: Ability to relate to complex statewide accounting systems through Statewide Network. Use of spreadsheet, database and word processing software. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
