Title: Painter I
Description: This is skilled work in the painting of buildings, fixtures, and equipment. Work involves preparation of various types of surfaces for painting and applying paint by use of spray guns and/or brushes. Work is performed under general supervision of the Paint Foreperson. The employee in this class has no supervisory responsibilities. Work requires working on ladders and scaffolds, as well as bending and kneeling. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.
Examples: Prepares surfaces for paint by scraping, sandpapering, wire brushing, and cleaning. Applies paints, varnishes, lacquers, shellacs, and other finishes. Tapes and beds sheetrock. Refinishes and restores interior and exterior painted surfaces. Paints new construction or modifications and alterations to buildings using brush, roller, or spray equipment. Refinishes office furniture, cabinets, shelves, table tops, and other furnishings. Maintains record of materials and labor expended on each job. Observes adequate fire prevention, safety, and housekeeping practices in all operations. Performs other duties as assigned and/or required.
Physical Condition: Moderate physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing over fifty pounds.
Experience: Two years of experience as a painter.
Knowledge: General knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools, equipment and materials of the painting trade. Knowledge of the proper preparation of surfaces to be painted, and of proper methods of mixing all types of paints. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the painting trade.
Education: Graduation from high school or vocational school.
Additional Requirements: Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Physical ability to work from high ladders and scaffolds, and in uncomfortable positions. Skill in applying paints and other finishes with brushes, rollers, and spraying equipment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *Requires employment physical exam. *A valid Texas driver's license is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
