Title: Caretaker of Sikes House and JS Bridwell Simulation Center
Description: Maintains grounds of Sikes House (the president’s home) and J. S. Bridwell Simulation Center and performs routine maintenance and repairs at both properties Performs skilled work in the care, upkeep, and maintenance of the grounds, including lawn, shrubbery, flowers, trees, walkways, and sprinkler systems. Performs routine maintenance of equipment. Produces an orderly, attractive appearance in areas surrounding Sikes House and the Simulation Center and maintains pool and pool storage house at president’s home. Performs routine maintenance and repairs of Sikes House and related structures and J. S. Bridwell Simulation Center. Reports directly to the university president.
Examples: Determines methods and tools to be used to accomplish tasks. Performs routine maintenance that includes mowing, watering, trimming shrubs, spraying plants, replacing plants, transporting dirt and fertilizer, litter removal, and trash disposal. Performs other duties, including tree-trimming, turf management, and general maintenance, such as seeding, laying sod, cutting, and raking. Uses motorized, heavy-duty equipment, including trucks, tractors, mowers, edging equipment, and chainsaws. Performs general household and building maintenance and repairs and equipment repairs within caretaker’s range of competency. Conducts routine, thorough inspections of grounds, equipment, and interior and exterior of structures and records dates and findings in a log. Reports problems to appropriate supervisor and files work orders with Facilities Services in instances in which additional support or equipment is needed. Opens residence and other buildings and areas of the property to university employees and contract workers when their services are required and ensures that the integrity of grounds and property is maintained while work is being performed. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Physical Condition: Requires heavy physical activity, including periodic heavy lifting of at least 50 pounds, climbing ladders, working in a squatting position, reaching approximately 30 inches in all directions, and pulling and bending.
Experience: Four years of experience in grounds maintenance or related activities and in routine maintenance and repairs of residences and buildings. Experience in maintaining and caring for hand tools, power tools, and other equipment used in performing duties.
Knowledge: Knowledge of landscaping and irrigation systems. Knowledge of tools, equipment, materials, and methods and practices used in maintaining grounds and performing general maintenance. Knowledge of proper care of plants, flowers, shrubs, trees, lawns, and structures; use of chemicals for insect and weed control; application and proper use of fertilizers; and safety precautions and hazards related to grounds and property maintenance. Knowledge of routine household and building maintenance and repair.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Additional Requirements: Able to operate tractors, forklifts, mowers, small machinery, and similar equipment. Able to perform routine maintenance and minor mechanical repairs on equipment, residences, and buildings. Demonstrates self-initiated work ethic. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *Requires employment physical exam. *A valid Texas driver's license is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
