Police Officer III
Responsible position involving the safeguarding of human lives and personal and public property, through the enforcement of criminal laws, ordinances, traffic laws, and the enforcement of the University regulations which specifically pertain to the behavior and welfare of students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Involves patrolling in patrol vehicles and on foot, all campus areas and surrounding jurisdiction, by day and night, to detect crimes, and to watch for fires and other conditions which might lead to the loss of life or property. Reports directly to the Police Sergeant under the general supervision of the Chief of Police.
Makes regular patrols inside and outside of buildings and around the campus grounds to watch for criminal activity, unsecured buildings, fires, steam, gas or water leaks, and for any other unusual conditions or irregularities. Investigates disturbances and other complaints. Makes arrests and files appropriate charges, where and when such action is required by law, issues citations for parking and traffic violations. Makes traffic accident investigations. Secures compliance with laws and university rules and regulations. Assists the Sergeant in detailed investigations and at times take responsibility for Sergeant's position.
Must have the physical and mental ability to properly carry out the duties and responsibilities of a commissioned police officer of Midwestern State University, to include the ability to speak and hear clearly. Must also meet the vision requirement established by TCLEOSE and have the physical use of all extremities in order to physically restrain or apprehend individuals when necessary.
Must hold the Advanced or Master Proficiency Certificate and meet all licensure requirements established by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE).
Requires advanced knowledge of state and local laws with the ability to apply them and to explain their working application to other officers. Ability to assist supervisor in planning and coordinating work of the department, and the ability to organize and direct a crime scene search. Requires high proficiency in ability to exercise good judgment when meeting and dealing with the campus community and public. Must perform above average in all phases of Police work.
Must have TCLEOSE Advanced or Master Proficiency Certification and additional law enforcement training as may be prescribed. High School graduation or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Years of experience may be substituted for degree.
*Required to work rotating shifts to include nights and weekends. Must have good moral character and support a fair and consistent application of the law. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships and exhibit courtesy and professionalism. *Regular reliable attendance is required. * This is a security sensitive position and requires satisfactory completion of a background check.
