Title: Benefits Coordinator
Description: Responsible with the Director of Human Resources for the overall coordination and administration of the University's fringe benefits programs for active employees and retirees. Will be required to prepare reports and statements to applicable State agencies ensuring compliance with mandated health insurance programs, flexible benefits programs, retirement programs, and other optional programs as provided by the State and/or the University. Will prepare financial statements to account for transfer of State and employee funds to the appropriate agencies having responsibility for receipt of insurance premiums. Acts as liaison between the University and the various insurance carriers (primarily ERS) to ensure that policies and procedures are in accordance with current legislation and that all employees and retirees are informed of their benefit coverages and responsibilities. The Benefits Coordinator reports directly to the Director.
Examples: Intercedes on behalf of employees to satisfy claims disputes, works closely with the Employee Retirement System on issues, policies, and procedures necessary to provide group benefits to University employees and retirees. Periodically briefs and explains various insurance coverage and options to employees and retirees. Will be responsible for procedures to initially enroll employees/retirees in these plans and arrange for correct reimbursement/collection of premiums. Explains procedures and enrolls those employees who elect to participate in flexible spending accounts. Audits insurance and flexible benefits clearing accounts. Prepares computer-generated files and reports as prescribed by the ERS and MSU payroll department for collection and payment of premiums. Communicates with employees on benefits programs and periodic changes in coverage. Provides orientation on benefits to all new employees. Works with and advises employees in pre-retirement planning including coordination with ERS, TRS, and other State or federal agencies providing retirement benefits. Performs death claims benefit counseling.
Physical Condition:
Experience: Three to five years experience working with employee benefits programs. Heavy emphasis on administration of group health insurance programs including resolution of problems relating to payment of claims. Two to three years experience with automated payroll procedures which deal with the withholding of insurance premiums and the administration of flexible spending accounts. Also requires some knowledge of tax laws and accounting procedures pertaining to retirement plans and tax sheltered annuities. Skilled in use of PC, typewriter and calculator and other office equipment.
Knowledge: Must have extensive experience in working with employees/retirees in stressful situations. Be well organized and able to effectively communicate and brief large groups of employees on insurance programs.
Education: College degree preferred; however, high school graduation with heavy experience in the specific job areas is acceptable.
Additional Requirements: Must have excellent communication and organizational skills, accounting experience, and previous knowledge and work experience with insurance procedures and terms. Use 10-key calculator by touch, typing skills, and knowledge of personal computer usage including Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience in managing retirement options and plans (403B, etc.) desirable. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
