Supervisory police work involving the supervision of police officers engaged in the protection and safeguarding of human lives and personal and public property. The duties of this position include the supervision and responsibility for on-the-job training and orientation of newly hired police officers. The exercise of independent judgment in expected within the limits of the provisions of traffic, civil, and criminal law, and university rules and regulations. Reports to the Chief of Police.
Supervises police officers in an assigned activity area by accompanying them on assignments, reviewing activity reports, and observing job performance and personal appearance. Conducts on-the-job training, familiarization and orientation of police officers in all phases of their work. Assists police officers in planning and performing various phases of their work assignments. Supervises the assignment of police officers to shifts. Assists in recruiting needed police officers; interviews applicants and conducts employment investigations of potential university employees.
Must have the physical and mental ability to properly carry out the duties and responsibilities of a commissioned police officer of Midwestern State University, to include the ability to speak and hear clearly. Must also meet the vision requirement establish by TCLEOSE and have the physical use of all extremities in order to physically restrain or apprehend individuals when necessary.
Requires a minimum of six years of experience as a commissioned Peace Officer with an Advanced Proficiency Certificate and licensure as issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education (TCLEOSE).
Thorough knowledge of traffic, civil and criminal law, city ordinances, and all university rules and regulations. Thorough knowledge of modern principles, practices, equipment, and techniques of police administration, organization, and operation. Ability to provide training and supervision to subordinate officers.
Must have TCLEOSE Advanced or Master Proficiency Certification and additional law enforcement training as may be prescribed. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Years of experience may be substituted for degree.
Must exhibit leadership qualities and have the ability to communicate with subordinates, area law enforcement agencies and the general public. Must be able to plan, direct, and coordinate the work of subordinates; and the ability to communicate effectively in writing as well as verbally. Must have a high degree of integrity, moral character, and personal behavior. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This is a security sensitive position and requires satisfactory completion of a background check.
