Course Objectives

 

Integration of understanding of the mechanism of injury into assessment techniques used to distinguish

                                 injuries common to the physically active individual with a focus on the upper extremity, cervical, and

                                 thoracic spine.

                                Prerequisite: ATRN 3903.  Co-requisite: ATRN 3811

 

Student Learning Outcomes:  Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Correlate mechanisms of injury with common presenting signs and symptoms.
  2. Use standard medical nomenclature in the accurate documentation of an injury assessment/evaluation. 
  3. Perform a comprehensive thoracic spine, cervical spine, and upper extremity injury assessment. 
  4. Distinguish factors that determine the disposition of an individual for participation in sports.
  5. Recognize, explain and demonstrate the proficiencies and competencies associated with the evaluation of upper extremity injuries, cervical spine injuries, and thoracic spine injuries.

Submission Format PolicyNote: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Late Paper Policy

 

Late Submission Policy: Assignments are DUE on the posted or announced date at the beginning of class.  If an assignment is turned in late (this includes the end of class), points will be deducted from the assignment.  If an assignment is not completed prior to the next class date you will receive a zero grade for that assignment.

 

Missed exams and assignments can only be made up if the absence was excused.  All must be completed within one week of the original due date.


Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements

 

***Attendance Policy: Attendance is mandatory.  Two absences will be allowed without penalty.  After the second absence, your semester grade will be dropped one letter grade.  For each additional absence, your grade will drop another letter grade.  Make up examinations will be provided within one (1) week of return to class, provided the absence is excused.

            -Do not let tardiness become a habit.  Three tardies will be equal to an absence.


Other Policies

 

Cell phones are not to be out or used during class.  If your cell phone is visible, expect to be dismissed from class.


Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
