Course Objectives

The focus of this lecture course is on the theoretical application of respiratory care to the pediatric and newborn patient. Topics include development of the pulmonary and cardiovascular systems, patient assessment, intrinsic lung diseases, congenital heart diseases, SIDS and apnea, applied pharmacotherapy, surfactant replacement therapy, and ventilatory support techniques.  


Course Expectations

PROJECT

The intent of this project is to share ideas and advance student knowledge of assessment and care of neonatal and pediatric patients.  Each student will present their project on the appropriate date (see course schedule).  You will be required to give a 5 minute presentation on a specific neonatal or pediatric respiratory topic that you interested in.  Examples include: monitoring techniques, oxygen delivery, conventional or non-conventional ventilation, administration of gas mixtures, congenital defects, cardiac defects, pediatric or neonatal diseases. Your project will be posted on the discussion board under the title project.  You must site your references at the end of your project in APA format.

LECTURE EXAMINATIONS                                                                 

During the semester there will be in-depth exams covering the specified material given in class and from your readings. Examinations may consist of true/false, multiple choice, short answer or essay questions.

         

FINAL EXAMINATION                                                            

A comprehensive examination will consist of true/false, multiple choice, short answer or essay questions.

Late Paper Policy

Anything not completed and handed in on time will be subjected to a 15% per day penalty (weekends and holidays included).  No exceptions!

Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
