To learn to read keenly in regard to increasing one's ability to recognize the thematic importance of details, tone and voice.
To improve one's ability to write informal essays effectively in terms of language use, supportive details, organization, and appropriateness of thematic development.
To improve one's ability to do scholarly research by preparing and writing a six-page research paper on an approved topic.
To participate effectively in class discussions. To write and turn in on time essays assigned, including the research paper.
To attend class regularly.
Grades will be assigned in regard to levels of excellence achieved in regard to grammatical correctness, effectiveness of vocabulary and sentence structure. These grades will be averaged arithmetically, though credit will be given for improvement. Regular class attendance is important.
In research work the students will use the MLA style format. Essays done outside of class should be turned in double-spaced and printed. Hand-written papers will, of course, be acceptable for papers written during class times.
If the absence is unexcused, late papers will be docked a letter grade for each class period the paper is late.
