MWF 10:00-10:50am
The goal of this course is to serve as an introduction to the subject of Ordinary Differential Equations. First and
Second order differential equations will be covered. Linear systems in two dimensions will be studied and the
concept of Phase Plane will be introduced. The spring-mass system will be seen with and without damping or
forcing. Laplace Transforms will be shown to resolve linear differential equations.
A graphing calculator is required.
There will be approximately 11 homeworks during the semester.
Three tests will be given during the semester.
The (compulsory) final exam will be comprehensive.
All tests and the final exam are closed-book tests with the use of the calculator permitted and required.
Students will write their tests and final exam on provided test forms.
Students are required to show all their calculations on tests.
Make-up tests will be given only in exceptional circumstances. Students must make the request for a
make-up test several days before the original class-scheduled test.
Students must attend all lectures. Attendance will be verified at the beginning of every lecture.
Students who miss more than five lectures will be withdrawn from the course (with a grade of WF
if before October 17, 2011 or with a grade of F if after this date).
The course grade for each student will be the best of the following two evaluations:
Evaluation 1:
Homework 5%
Test 1 20%
Test 2 20%
Test 3 20%
Final Exam 35%
Evaluation 2:
Best Test 20%
2nd Best Test 20%
Worst Test 0%
Final Exam 55%
