Course Objectives

 Equations, inequalities, rational expressions, exponents, logarithms, radicals, functions, graphs, and systems of equations. Each student must have a graphing calculator.


Course Expectations

Prerequisite: MATH 1003 with a grade of C or better, math THEA (formerly TASP) score of 270, or satisfactory score on placement exam.

You are also required to have a graphing calculator and bring it and your textbook  to class every day.  NOTE: You are not allowed to use a TI-89 or higher on exams.


Grading Standards

Grading: The student’s final grade will be calculated out of a total of 670 points.  The breakdown of points is as follows:

            attendance                                           20 points

            quizzes            (10 pts each)                          100 points      

            exams  (100 pts each)                         400 points

            final exam                                            150 points

            total                                                     670 points

 

The grading scale is     A         90%-100%      603-670 points

                                    B         80%-90%        536-602 points

                                    C         70%-80%        469-535 points

                                    D         60%-70%        402-468 points

                                    F          less than 60%  401 points or less

Attendance Requirements

Attendance policy: Attendance is calculated out of 20 points.  The point breakdown is:  

 

number of absences:                0-1       2          3          4  or more                                  

points for attendance:               20        15        8          0                     

 

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of every class.  Any student who is late or who leaves early may be counted as absent. This will result in a zero on any quiz or other assignment for the day. Any student who misses 7 or more classes may be dropped from the course.


Other Policies

Homework: Homework is not counted as a specific part of your grade and will not be collected on a regular basis.  However, quiz and exam problems are based on homework problems, so it would benefit you to complete every homework assignment.  Dr. Knox will answer questions concerning homework at the beginning of each class.  Dr. Knox  reserves the right to collect homework at any time.

 

Quizzes: There will be twelve quizzes given throughout the semester, each worth 10 points.  Only ten of the quizzes will count toward your final grade—the lowest two quiz scores will be dropped at the end of the semester.  For this reason, make-up quizzes will not be given for any reason.

 

Exams: There will be four exams and a final exam.  The dates of the four exams are:

The final exam is on Tuesday, December 6, 2011, 1-3pm.

 

Make-up exams are given at the discretion of Dr. Knox.  If an exam is missed, every effort must be made by the student to notify Dr. Knox as soon as possible.  It is best to call your professor rather than email when you miss an exam.  NOTE: You are not allowed to use a TI-89 or higher on exams.


Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
