Course Objectives

Students will:  

  • Understand the role of computers in society, past and present
  • Gain familiarity with computer terminology across a wide variety of disciplines, building a framework for computer use in a technological world
  • Demonstrate an understanding of lifelong learning and application of computers to everyday problems through software tools and online techniques
  • Learn to apply word processing, spreadsheet applications, and presentation software to business and other real-life problems (MS Office 2010)

Course Expectations

 

Students will complete the following tests and assignments:

  • 3 Tests:  Emerge Concepts
  • 3 Tests: one each on MS Word 2010, MS Excel 2010, MS PowerPoint 2010

 

Assignments:

  • Email assignment
  • 1 Essay written in MS Word
  • 2 Word Projects completed in SAM 2010
  • 3 Excel Projects completed in SAM 2010
  • 2 Power Point Presentation Projects completed in SAM 2010
  • 6 Training Assignments (2 each in Word, Excel, Power Point) completed in SAM 2010

Submission Format Policy

All assignments (except the first email assignment) MUST be submitted through the Emerge Web Site or the SAM 2010 Web Site system.  (Only students officially enrolled in the course have access to the course web sites.)

Please note that all assignments are due before midnight on a Thursday.
All exams (except) the final exam must be started before midnight on a Thursday.



Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Late Paper Policy

All assignments are accepted late for 1 week past the due date.  Five points per day will be deducted for each day late.  After 1 week, a grade of zero is assigned. 

Tests cannot be taken late. Test must be started before midnight on the date due.  Once started, you have one hour to complete the test and you can continue past midnight.


Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements

"Attendance" for this Internet-based course will be determined by the work completed.  The official last date of attendance will be the date of the last assignment submitted or the last test completed.  Failure to turn in assignments and complete tests on time will constitute "absences" and will cause the student to be reported to the appropriate offices on MSU campus that track student attendance.  (E.G.  Dean of Students, Financial Aid, Athletics, etc.)

Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
