Course Objectives

 

A directed study of the effects of diet on health and physical activity.  Topics addressed include nutrient metabolism, weight control, health-related fitness, supplementation, pharmacology, and drug interactions.


Course Expectations

a. Online Discussions:

There are no scheduled “chat” sessions. There are four discussion topics/questions that will be posted. Each is worth 25 points (possible 100 points). To earn credit for participation, you must respond to the initial post from the instructor and then post an additional response to another student stating your opinion or providing additional information that is constructive to the discussion. The discussions allow you to engage and interact with other students. All posting must be informative and NOT disruptive, rude or contain fowl language. It is “ok” to disagree, but keep your postings “respectful and polite”.

b. Written Assignments:
Assignment #1
Introduction= E-mail me through WebCT mail with the following information: Your full name, Name you want to be called, Major at MSU, Why you are taking this class, What you hope to get out of this class, Anything you need me to know about you. Submit this assignment by 11:00 PM August 31, 2011.
INTRODUCTION= 10 POINTS

Assignment #2 (1-2 page mini-paper***)
Choosemyplate.gov (MyPyramid.gov) = You need to locate this website (look on your left menu bar and open “Web Links” and set up an on-line account. This website will allow you to track your eating and exercise habits throughout the day. You need to start this assignment on Monday, August 29, 2011. On Friday , September 2nd , write a 3 paragraph paper that includes the following: 1st paragraph: what you anticipated your eating habits to be, 2nd paragraph: what were the results for the week, 3rd paragraph: what you are going to change for the next week. This mini-paper is due by 11:00 PM on September 5th 2011. You must submit via assignment Drop Box through BLACK BOARD/WebCT .

Mini Paper= 30 points

Assignment #3 aka Eating disorder assignment (2-4 page report***)-Due by 11:00 p.m. on OCTOBER 30, 2011
Eating Disorder Paper= Choose ONE of the following conditions: anorexia, bulimia, eating disorder not otherwise specified, or hypergymnasia. In a paper, explain the following:
MIMINUM Requirements:
Provide at least 2 paragraphs: What are signs/symptoms of the disorder?
Provide at least 1 paragraph: What are the medical concerns of the disorder?
Provide at least 1 paragraph: How does the disorder you chose differ from others?
Provide at least 2 paragraphs: If your child, friend, spouse, significant other, etc. displayed these signs/symptoms, how will you appropriately handle the situation?

You CANNOT just use the information in the textbook. You need to list at least 2 references other than your required text book. These references can be journals, other texts, magazines, etc. References MUST be cited in the text of the paper. References must also be listed in order at the end of your paper. AMA, APA and MLA are acceptable formats for your paper.
Eating Disorder Paper= 70 points for paper; + 30 points for three textbook and outside references = 100 points for completion of assignment. You must submit via assignment Drop Box through BLACK BOARD/WebCT .

Assignment #4 (5 page report***)
Continue to track your eating and exercise habits from Assignment #2, this is a semester long assignment. Your final paper for this assignment is due by 11:00pm December 2, 2010. You must include the following in your paper:
1st page = your assumptions of your diet before you started this assignment
2nd page = what did you do well each week and what did you do poorly each week. (summarize the weeks, highlight one week in particular that illustrated your behaviors. Be sure to list specific examples of calories ingested and burned, foods with high sodium content, amounts of proteins, fats and carbohydrates ingested.
3rd page = were you able to change from week to week. (i.e. did your eating habits improve? Did you not improve your eating habits?)
4th page = what are your goals for the future after fulfilling this assignment (What are your plans to eat “healthy”)
5th page = how can you educate others after completing this assignment
Final Paper= 50 points

***Written Paper/Reports Requirements: You need to use 12 point font and Times/Roman in a Microsoft Word document. 1 inch margins ALL Around. Do NOT change the margins or you will be given a 0 for the assignment. DOUBLE SPACE your paper. You must submit via assignment Drop Box through BLACK BOARD/WebCT .

c. EXAMS:
Exams= There are five exams for this course. The exam dates are: September 4th, September 18th, October 9th, November 13th and December 4th. All exams will be given on-line through Black Board/WebCT. The exams will be available after 2 PM on the day listed, so as to give you enough time to read the required material also assigned for that day. Each exam is open for 48 hours; it will open on the date listed at 2 PM and close two days later at 11 PM. The purpose of each exam is to test your knowledge of the information for the topics covered. The format of the test will be multiple choice questions. There will be varying number of questions with some questions weighted differently than others. (Some questions will be worth more points than others). Instructions for each exam will be given prior to your taking it.
EXAM= 25 points each (5 exams x 25 points = 125 points possible)

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Late Paper Policy

Late Submission Policy: Assignments/exams are DUE on the posted or announced date by the end of the day. For example, the first assignment is due on August 29, 2010. Written assignments must be in my WebCT mailbox by 11 PM of the due date. Late assignments/exams will not be accepted.

Missed exams and assignments can only be made up if the absence was excused and the student has proper documentation (Dean of students or Doctor’s note). All must be completed within one week of the original due date.


Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
