Course Objectives

  

Course description:

 

This course is intended for the distance education learner. An overview of drug use in society and as a social problem is provided. Preventing and treating substance abuse will be briefly addressed. Laws regulating drugs will be reviewed. The way various drugs work in the body, affect mood, thought and behavior will be covered. Specific drugs addressed in detail will be stimulants, depressants and inhalants, medications for mental disorders, alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, over the counter drugs, opiods, hallucinogens, marijuana, and performance enhancing drugs.

 

Objectives:

 

  1. Recognize the difference between addiction, abuse and other key concepts in substance abuse.
  2. Will understand the pharmacology, tolerance and effects of legal and illegal substances.
  3. Distinguish between the medical model (disease) and the holistic model (whole person).
  4. Respect cultural differences in attitudes toward and use of substances.
  5. Familiarity with substance abuse treatment and prevention. 

     

    Exams

     

    All exams will be taken on Blackboard/WebCT during the prescribed time period. Each exam will contain only questions from those modules, power point presentations and chapters assigned. Grading Standards

STudents must earn 90% of total available points for an A, 80% for a B, 70% for a C and 60% for a D.

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Late Paper Policy

Late assignments/test will be penalized one letter grade.


Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
