Course Objectives

 

Course Description

Students develop musicianship and performance skills through individual applied lessons on their major instrument. Students receive lessons of 50-60 minutes throughout the semester, perform in the trumpet/horn Studio Ensemble, and play an end of semester jury to earn a grade. Students are required to perform solo on one Monday recital. 

 

Course Objectives

  1. To develop technical, musical, and performance skills on their major instrument
  2. To learn repertoire for their major instrument
  3. To demonstrate knowledge and musicianship through performance
  4. To demonstrate concert etiquette as a performer and a listener

Course Expectations

 

Student Expectations

Daily practice of two hours is suggested to complete all assignments at a high performance standard for the next lesson. Students earn a grade for each lesson. Therefore students are expected to prepare assigned material weekly.

 

Weekly lesson material may include but is not limited to:

  1. Warm Up
  2. Long Tones
  3. Lip Slurs
  4. Technical Exercises
  5. Scale Project – one or two a semester
  6. Multiple Tonguing
  7. Master Etudes
  8. Transposition
  9. Sight Reading
  10. Solo – minimum one a semester
  11. Studio Ensemble Music

Submission Format PolicyNote: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements

 

Attendance

Students are expected to attend all lessons. Excused absences from lessons are considered on an individual basis. Advance notice must be given for an absence to be considered excused. Excused lessons may or may not be rescheduled depending on the instructors’ schedule. Unexcused missed lessons are not rescheduled and the semester grade is lowered one letter grade. Unprepared students may be released from their lesson with their semester grade lowered one letter grade.


Other Policies

 

Conduct

Students are to be respectful during lessons to maximize learning. If a student is asked to leave a lesson due to disrespect, the lesson will count as an absence and the semester grade will be lowered by one letter. 

 

Special Needs

If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information that needs sharing, or if you need special accommodations in case the building must be evacuated, please make an appointment with the professor as soon as possible.

 

Privacy Statement

Federal privacy law prohibits the instructor from releasing information about students to certain parties outside of the university without the signed consent of the student. Thus, in almost all cases the professor will not discuss students’ academic progress or other matters with their parents. Please do not have them call. Regardless of these important legal considerations, the professors’ general policy is to communicate with the students, not their parents, even when a student has signed a consent form. College students are adults and are expected to behave accordingly.

 

Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty including plagiarism and giving or receiving unauthorized assistance is prohibited. Please review the University Honor Code. Any offense is reported.

 

 

 

 


Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
