Course Objectives

Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes: 

  • To know the history and philosophy, and trends in marriage, couple, and family counseling
  • To understand the ethical and legal considerations specifically related to the practice of marriage, couple and family counseling
  • To know the roles and functions of marriage, couple and family counselors in a variety of practice settings and in relation to other helping professionals
  • Become familiar with the professional organizations, preparation standards and credentials relevant to the practice of marriage, couple and family counseling
  • Understand a variety of models and theories of marriage, couple and family counseling
  • Understand family development and the life cycle, sociology of the family, family phenomenology, contemporary families, family wellness, families and culture, aging and family issues, family violence, and related family concerns
  • Understand the impact of crises, disasters, and other trauma-causing events on marriages, couples, families, and households
  • Students will:  demonstrate the ability to apply and adhere to ethical and legal standards in this field, and demonstrate the ability to select models or techniques appropriate to couples’ or families’ presenting problems.

Attendance Requirements

Attendance Policy:  Attendance is mandatory in this class.  ANY absence will result in a loss of 10 points off your total score and will affect your final grade.  Three times being tardy and three times leaving early will be considered as one absence. 

 


Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
