Course Objectives

Given the limits on our available time, we will read and discuss a series of representative texts while we attempt to understand more fully the intellectual environments associated with British Romanticism, Victorianism, Modernism . . . and a few later developments.

Course Expectations

Final grades in the class will be created from three sources:

 

1)  Three exams will require answering brief questions regarding the assigned readings.  We will discuss the format and scoring procedures before the first exam.  The exam average will create 70% of the final grade.

 

2)  Secondly, about mid-term and just before term's end, everyone will turn in a brief, primary-source essay reacting to the materials we have studied.  The essay average will be worth 25% of the final grade.  PLEASE START THE ESSAYS EARLY, bring drafts in for help.

 

3)  In addition, I will expect everyone to arrive each day prepared to respond to questions or to approach me with issues to be discussed.  Please maintain a participation log to keep track of all the times one has spoken with me in class.  I need to see fifteen entries from someone expecting to receive full participation credit.  This log will be turned in at the semester's end and will count for the final 5% of the grade. 


Grading Standards

In this class, the following numerical equivalents for final grades are used: A = 100-90%; B = 89-80%; C = 79-70%; D = 69-60%; F = 59-0%.

Submission Format Policy

Final and intermediate drafts of written work must be typed.   All essays will be submitted in MLA form.

By enrolling in this class, the student expressly grants MSU a “limited right” to all intellectual property created by the student for the purpose of this course.  The “limited right” shall include but shall not be limited to the right to reproduce the student’s work product in order to verify originality and authenticity, and for educational purposes.

Late Paper Policy

Unless specific arrangements have been made, I cannot accept late work.


Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements

Regular class attendance will be expected.  Roll will be taken at every class.  After the first cut, each additional two can lower the final grade one letter mark.  Two late arrivals equal one cut.  A late arrival will be defined as an arrival after I have taken roll.

Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
