TR 5-6:20 PM
This material is presented for students who are scheduled to enroll in Physical Chemistry in the fall semester subsequent to this course. This material is important for other advanced science classes at the undergraduate level. Course material in Physical Chemistry II, Advanced Inorganic Chemistry, elements of physics and engineering courses, as well as applications of mathematics for math majors are covered in the material presented in this semester.
Mathematics for the physical sciences is a practical application of mathematics, and there will be theory presented as needed, but most information will be presented with an applications format. Student performance will be measured by examinations (and these will be open text), quizzes and the final. Not all homework will be graded, but it must be completed on time without exception. Homework as a group for mutual assistance is acceptable, but final solutions must be individual. A quiz will be given at the start of each class period over previous homework material .
Topics by Subject: I. Series II. Complex Numbers III. Linear Algebra IV. Partial Differentiation V. Multivariate Integration VI. Vector Analysis (Chapters 1-6 in Boas, 3rd edition)
Exams will occur when the material for two chapter lecture segments is completed in class.
A quiz will be given at the start of each class period over previous material. There will be 3 exams and a comprehensive final. The dates of these exams will be announced in as timely a manner as possible.
Quizzes: 35% Exams: 40% Final Exam: 25%
Scale: 85-100% A; 70-84% B; 55-69% C; 40-54% D; 0-39% F
Homework will be assigned every day, but usually not taken up. Instead, the quizzes will assess your comprehension of the material. It is in your best interest to do the homework, even though it will likely not be graded. If the instructor deems that it would benefit the class to grade the homework, he may choose to do so, without prior notice.
The two lowest quizzes will be dropped, and any quizzes missed for an excused absence will not have to be made up, however you are still responsible for learning the material you missed. Absences are not considered excused without a written note from a third party, on letterhead, with a (valid) reason for absence, signature and contact information. Acceptance of absence excuse is at the discretion of the instructor. If an exam is missed, you will be given the opportunity to make it up with your final exam. If you arrive after the quiz is given, are not excused for an absence or if you leave early without a valid excuse, your quiz grade for that day will be forfeit.
It is in your best interest to attend every class. Attendance is taken in the form of a daily quiz, and missing (or being late for) class will put you behind and it will be difficult to catch up.
