NURS 4013 Theories and Concepts: Nursing the Childbearing Family

This course applies theories and concepts used by the nurse to assist childbearing families achieve their maximum potential. A focus on patient/family education is integrated throughout the course. Lifestyle and cultural diversity within individual, families, and communities is emphasized. Reliable information drawn from a variety of sources including nursing research assists the student to develop an evidence-based practice. Reproductive processes and women’s health issues within the context of a variety of healthcare settings are explored through use of the nursing process, critical thinking and problem solving.
Credit Hours: Four (4) credit hours—two (3) lecture hours and six (6) clinical hours per week

1. Turn all cell phones and pagers OFF. Place in back packs at back of room.
Students are expected to take exams on the day they are scheduled. If you are ill or cannot take the exam on the scheduled day, please notify course instructor 2 hours before the scheduled exam to arrange an exam make-up on the allotted day. All make-up exams must be taken prior to the Mother/Baby HESI exam. This must be scheduled with instructor prior to this date.

Communication with Instructors:
WebCT e-mail is the preferred method of communication with instructors. This is preferred because: 1) with WebCT e-mail there is a record of all communications; and 2) instructors can retrieve and answer the e-mails from off campus if they are out of the office. In the subject line of the e-mail please put the instructor’s name and the topic (e.g. Jansen, exam grade, or Bowles, breastfeeding assignment). Please be sure any attachment has your name on it.
Some of your e-mails may be answered via Discussion Board if the answer would benefit everyone in the class. If you want to communicate with one class member please use the e-mail rather than the Discussion Board. Responses on the Discussion Board intended for one or only a few class members should use the “reply privately” option so everyone else doesn’t have to read these conversations. For example, if you request help in finding an answer, and you want to thank a classmate for a response, please “reply privately” so the whole class doesn’t have to open and read it. The class will appreciate this consideration.

Students are expected to attend all classroom, clinical, and SIMs experiences. Roll will be taken each class. A seating chart will be used in order to better get to know each of you. Students who must be absent from class or clinical due to unforeseen circumstances are responsible for notifying the instructor of their absence. Notification must be prior to the scheduled time of the class or clinical experiences stated in the BSN Student Handbook. All absences in clinical and SIMS must be made up. Failure to do so will result in clinical failure. Please refer to Student Handbook for explanation of Clinical failure.
Consistent with the university policy to allow each faculty member the freedom and responsibility to create a quality learning environment for all students, the faculty member may dismiss a student from class for either disruption of the learning process, excessive tardiness and excessive absences, or lack of reasonable effort. A student dismissed for such reasons will be given a course grade of “F”. Please be in class and in your seat as the class begins. The door will be closed as class begins. If you arrive late and the door is closed, please wait until the break to enter. It is very disruptive to the students and faculty who are on time.
The BSN Program does not condone cheating in any form and considers it a serious offense. Cheating includes, but is not limited to, (1) use of any unauthorized assistance in taking quizzes, tests, or examinations; (2) dependence upon the aid of sources beyond those authorized by the instructor in writing papers, preparing reports, solving problems, or completing other assignments; or (3) the acquisition of tests or other academic materials belonging to the university faculty or staff without permission.
Plagiarism is further defined as “the act of using source materials of other persons (either published or unpublished) without following the accepted techniques of crediting, or the submission for credit of work not the individual’s to whom credit is given.” (MSU Student Handbook, Standards of Conduct, Item 10.) Offending material that may constitute plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, the following: bibliography cards, formal papers, book reports, written nursing care plans, etc.
By enrolling in this course, the student expressly grants MSU a “limited right” in all intellectual property created by the student for the purpose of this course. The “limited right” shall include but shall not be limited to the right to reproduce the student’s work product in order to verify originality, and educational purposes. For further information regarding cheating and any subsequent actions to be taken please refer to the policy statement in the BSN Student Handbook.
The faculty reserves the right to recommend to the Program Coordinator and Chairperson of Wilson School of Nursing withdrawal of a student from the nursing program for health, legal, professional, or academic reasons, particularly if patient care is jeopardized. In addition, the student must perform within the ANA Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
1. Students must maintain a grade of C or above. (Lower limit scores are: A=90%; B=80%; C=74%)
2. Students MUST have an average of 74% on all work in order to pass the course. GRADES WILL NOT BE ROUNDED.
3. Students must meet all course and clinical requirements; failure in either the didactic or
clinical component will constitute failure of the course.
Clinical Learning Objectives

2. Clinical area forms must be addressed and/or signed each clinical and kept in a folder to be turned in once all clinical have been completed. These forms will be found in WebCt under “clinical forms”. All forms must be turned in to clinical instructor as soon as all clinical experiences have been completed.
A form will be provided so that at the completion of each clinical, you will give to the preceptor. This will assist them in tracking clinically precepted time for their clinical ladder. This form will also be posted under “clinical forms”.

Post clinical conference will consist of posting a 100-200 word summary of your clinical experience for each of the units. There will be a designated area for each discussion on WebCt Discussion Board. Discussions must be posted after completion of your clinical on each unit. There will be a total of 4 postings (Post Partum-1, Nursery-1, Labor and Delivery-1, and Triage/Antepartum-1). For Post Partum and Nursery, post discussions after you have completed both clinicals on each unit. For example, after your second Postpartum and Nursery clinicals, post your discussion of the two experiences. Explain how they were alike or different or what you learned. Please be positive and constructive in your summary. Do not mention patient or preceptor Always use appropriate and non-offensive language in describing your experience. Failure to post your discussion will result in a clinical failure. Clinical failures will prevent you from passing the course.
5. Absence from Clinical
Students are expected to attend all clinical experiences. If a student must be late for clinical, he/she must notify the clinical unit immediately. If a clinical must be missed, the student is responsible for notifying their instructor via WebCT email. Or phone. Using email is for your protection. It is verification of your notification; however, notification must be prior to the scheduled time of the clinical experience. Any absence from clinical will necessitate rescheduling the clinical day. The faculty member or preceptor has the right to request the student to leave if that a student is not prepared for clinical. If a student is sent home for cause, this will constitute a clinical failure, which will result in failure of the course. Once you have scheduled a clinical, you are expected to follow the schedule. Numerous schedule changes will not be allowed. Certainly, if you are ill or an emergency has occurred you will be given consideration.
Clinical Dress Code:
The student is expected to follow the Uniform Guidelines in the BSN Student Handbook as well as the clinical facility guidelines. Please bring a stethoscope and your B/Peds/Women’s Health Notes to each clinical.
6. Professional Behavior:
Remember that you are representing Midwestern State University when you are either in class, SIMs or on a clinical unit. Please show the staff respect by allowing them to sit for report and while charting on their patients. Do not congregate in the conference room or around the front desk. Do not take cell phones on the unit. If you must make an emergency call, notify your preceptor and step off the unit. Do not use the computer while on the unit unless instructed to download information.
You will be given a parking badge which will allow you to park in the employee lot east of the main building. You will also receive a proximity badge which will allow you to access most staff areas of Bridwell Tower. Both parking and proximity badges will be checked out to each student at the beginning of the semester and must be returned by the end of the semester. Failure to return either of the badges will result in a clinical failure which will prevent you from passing the course. Loss of either badge MUST be reported immediately to security at United Regional Health Care System. You will also be required to pay for the lost badge(s).
You will be allowed to chart on the computer on Postpartum and Antepartum, but will not chart in triage, Labor and Delivery, or Nursery. You may only access information related to your assigned patient.
7. Clinical Evaluations:
Level of performance in the clinical component of this course is evaluated using the preceptor evaluation of clinical tool. They will be returned to the instructor after the completion of each clinical. Students will evaluate the course and clinical experience at the end of the semester. These evaluations will be anonymous and will used to improve content presentation and application.
8, Clinical Failure Policy:
The faculty recognizes that the issues of patient safety and professional standards cannot be compromised: therefore any student who does not meet these standards will be immediately counseled. (Please review Student Handbook for Policy for Professional Behavior.)
9. Immunizations and Insurance:
All students must present documentation that they are in compliance with state and program mandated immunization requirements. Failure to do so will prevent the student from attending clinical laboratory experience until they are in compliance.
All students must show documentation of current liability insurance prior to attending clinical laboratory experience. Please speak with the Clinical Coordinator with any questions you may have in this regard.
