Bio Course: This course is intended to provide an overview of technical and theoretical applications of electron microscopy to the study of biological systems. The lecture will focus on the principles of transmission and scanning electron microscopy and the laboratory will focus on technique, with emphasis on the use of the environmental scanning electron microscope.
Laboratory: The lab will focus on the operation of the Phillips XL30 ESEM; Laboratory activities each week will include activities that demonstrate concepts presented in lecture. Topics associated with TEM will be introduced and techniques will be demonstrated when appropriate.

Examinations: Midterm and Final (objective); Lab attendance and performance (subjective);
Class participation (subjective). Class participation will include a short presentation on various aspects of EM or a literature review.
Grading: Grade Scale Components
A > 90 Midterm 25%
B > 80 Final 25%
C > 70 Lab 30%
D > 60 Class 20%
F < 60
Attendance: Lecture and Laboratory attendance is expected. Students with excessive (more than 3) unexcused absences may be dropped from the course.
Excused absences: Absences will be excused for the following reasons: presenting at/attending a scientific meeting, a university sanctioned extracurricular event, attendance at the funeral of a close family member (parent/sibling/grandparent/child). Any other absences will be excused at the discretion of the instructor. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain notes or other information covered during an absence.exam.
Make-up Exams: Arrangements for make-up tests must be made prior to the test date. If a student is absent for a test without prior arrangement no make-up test will be offered. See excused absences (below).
