Course Objectives

 

Course Description: Differentiation of functions of one variable with applications, integration including simple substitution and numerical evaluation, and applications of integration.  Each student must have a graphing calculator.


Course Expectations

 

Prerequisite: MATH 1433 or 1534 with a grade of C or better

 

Textbook: Calculus (Early Transcendental Functions, 5th ed) by Larson and Edwards


Grading Standards

 

Grading: The student’s final grade will be calculated out of a total of 650 points.  The breakdown of points is as follows:

 

            quizzes            (10 pts each)            100 points      

            exams  (100 pts each)                         400 points

            final exam                                            150 points

            total                                                     650 points

 

The grading scale is     A         90%-100%      585-650 points

                                    B         80%-90%        520-584 points

                                    C         70%-80%        455-519 points

                                    D         60%-70%        390-454 points

                                    F          less than 60%  less than 390 points

Attendance Requirements

 

Attendance policy: Attendance will be taken at the beginning of every class.  Any student who is late or who leaves early may be counted as absent. This will result in a zero on any quiz or other assignment for the day. Any student who misses 7 or more classes may be dropped from the course.


Other Policies

 

Homework: Homework is not counted as a specific part of your grade and will not be collected on a regular basis.  However, quiz and exam problems are based on homework problems, so it is essential for you to complete every homework assignment.  Dr. Knox  reserves the right to collect homework at any time. 

 

 

Quizzes: There will be twelve quizzes given throughout the semester, each worth 10 points.  Only ten of the quizzes will count toward your final grade—the lowest two quiz scores will be dropped at the end of the semester.  For this reason, make-up quizzes will not be given for any reason.

The final exam is 10:30am-12:30pm on Wednesday, May 9, 2012. 

 

Make-up exams are given at the discretion of Dr. Knox.  If an exam is missed, every effort must be made by the student to notify Dr. Knox as soon as possible.  It is best to call your professor rather than email when you miss an exam.  NOTE: You are not allowed to use a TI-86 or higher on exams.


Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
