Course Objectives

Your primary objective will be to learn correct use of mathematical terminology and notation.  You will also be learning problem solving skills from the point of view of a mathematician.  This course will satisfy the mathematics core curriculum requirement for most majors.  A student who completes this course with a grade of C or better is ready to take trigonometry or precalculus.

Submission Format Policy

Graded work will be completed in the classroom on forms provided by the instructor or on long scantrons.  It may be possible for a small fraction of the grade to come through online work through Courescompass.com



Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Late Paper Policy

Missed quizzes may not be made up, but at least two of your lowest quiz scores will be dropped.

If you need to miss an exam, you should notify me before the exam is given.  If you miss an exam due to an unforeseen situation, such as an accident, you should notify me as soon as possible.  No allowances will be made for missed exams unless an adequate reason is given in a timely fashion.


Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements

Please come to class.  If you should need to miss a class, arrive late, or leave early, then you should inform me of your need to do so.  Students absent more than 4 times may be dropped, but you will not be dropped for excessive absences as long as you maintain a passing average.


Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
