Course Objectives

To develop an appreciation of the importance of effective speech in the communication process and to grow in understanding that process.
To learn to control communication anxiety.
To understand the vocal instrument and its correct use.
To develop knowledge and understanding of the International Phonetic Alphabet and to apply the IPA to exercises in speech improvement with General American Speech as the model.
To grow in the ability to monitor and improve one’s speech habits.

Grading Standards

There will be four written examinations and four in-class presentations. Periodically, students may be quizzed or asked to submit transcription exercises for grading. The assignments and point values may change at the instructor’s discretion; however, the students will be notified of any such changes.

Submission Format PolicyNote: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Late Paper Policy

All graded assignments should be submitted on or before the deadline.
5 points per class period may be deducted for late assignments, including tests, unless the instructor is notified in advance with an “excused” reason for the absence.
If the instructor is notified in advance, but the student fails to complete the assignment immediately upon return, the points may still be deducted.

Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements

Attendance at class sessions is expected. 3 points will be deducted for each absence after the first one.
It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor concerning missed assignments, tests, etc. due to absence from class.

Other Policies

Students should keep track of assignments and should take careful notes during lectures. Keeping up with transcription exercises is imperative to doing well on tests and oral presentations.

It is also the student’s responsibility to inform the instructor if extra instruction is needed at any time. The instructor will not know if a student is struggling unless the student makes the instructor aware. Do not hesitate to contact the instructor at any time!

Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
