Course Objectives

COURSE OVERVIEW:
This course will investigate the use of picture archival and communications systems and its impact on health care. Topics will include comparison of computer based records to traditional film records, PACS impact on teleradiology, as will as the acquisition of a system, medical-legal, productivity, image compression, and image storage and retrieval issues.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Following completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
1. Define concept of PACS.
2. Describe computer processing, storage, and communication.
3. Identify and relate to PACS terminology
4. Examine the components of a PACS
5. Describe workflow, volume/storage capacity and PACS equipment needs.
6. Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of implementing a PACS.

I - Introduction

Write a 1-2 page introduction to PACS

II - PACS Terms

Pick at least 25 terms (with definitions - you can use terms from unit II, textbook, Internet, etc.) you feel would be the most beneficial to someone learning about PACS

III - Teleradiology

Find 2 articles about teleradiology. Write a 2 page summary (using the articles you found and chp. 26 of the text book) stating the similarities and differences between teleradiography and PACS

IV - Case Study of a Hospital/Clincs PACS (Site Profiles )

Find 1 article describing a site profile of their PACS. Diagnostic Imaging PACS web site (listed below) has site profiles and virtual tours (located on the bottom right of web page). Write a 2 page summary of the article.

V - Planning

Find 1 article on planning and 1 article on implementation of PACS. Write a 2 page summary about the articles and tell if you agree and disagree with the authors.

VI - PACS Consideration

Write a 2 page paper on how you would persuade your hospital/clinic to invest their time and money in PACS. (Use the textbook and search web sites listed below).

VII - Model Cost Analysis

See unit VIII from the course content

VIII - Other PACS Issues

Find 1 article for each of the following: legal issues, security issues, voice recognition, and workstation design. Also, include articles on TWO other areas you think should be considered. Summarize these six articles in a 2 page paper.

IX - Multiple choice questions from reading (27 total)

90 and above = A

80-89 = B

70-79 = C

60-69 = D

59 and below = F

Attendance Requirements

This is an online course and as such there are no mandatory sessions.  However, the student should be vigilant in checking email and logging onto WebCT.  Regular checks will insure that messages from the instructor are received in a timely manner. This course is on a schedule that will be strictly adhered to (see table below). I am available to meet in person just call for an appointment.


Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
