Course Objectives

 

Neonatal Critical Care

1. Neonatal/Pediatric vital signs

2. Neonatal/Pediatric Patient Assessment

3. Pediatric CPR

4. Setup and ventilation via endotracheal tube

5. Perform ventilatory management on a neonate

6. Observe/perform capillary gas on a neonate

7. Neonatal chest x-ray interpretation to include: ETT placement, UAC   

   placement, heart size, lung conditions, and pneumothorax.


Course Expectations

MANDATORY ITEMS:

Each Student will successfully complete 15 competencies.

Failure to complete 15 competencies will result in a failing grade!

To get an A in this course the student must:

  1. Complete 15-28 competencies.
  2. Complete all DLs.
  3. To have at least 90 points on the graded items.

To get a B in this course the student must:

  1. Complete 15-28 competencies.
  2. Complete all DLs.
  3. Have between 80-89 points on the graded items.

To get a C in this course the student must:

  1. Complete 15-28 competencies.
  2. Complete all DLs.
  3. Have between 75-79 points on the graded items.

A student is guaranteed a grade of less than C if:

   1. Complete less than 15 competencies.

   2. Any DLs are missing.

  1. If the points on the graded items are less than 74.

MANDATORY ITEMS:

 

Each student will compile a clinical portfolio documenting the learning activities for the semester.

The clinical portfolio is to be organized as follows:

In a 3 ring binder create divisions (using tab sheets) for the following in the exact order listed.

  1. Cover sheet
  2. Course syllabus
  3. Clinical schedule
  4. Sign in sheet
  5. Competency list
  6. Daily log form w/care plans (when in ICU)
  7. Daily performance evaluations
  8. End of rotation (Affective) performance evaluation
  9. Clinical site evaluations

 

General requirements

Each Student will successfully complete any competencies not completed in any other rotation.

  1. Daily logs-Daily logs are used to document the practice of clinical skills of the student. It is vital that these logs are completed every day the student attends clinic. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that these logs are completed daily – before you leave the clinic. Activities performed during the day may be listed on the log from the list of competencies contained in the clinical portfolio.
  2. Sign in sheets-the student must be signed in and out for each day in clinic – no exceptions!
  3. Care plans-when in the NICU the student will complete a care plan for each patient the student is caring for on the day.  The care plan format will be discussed in class before clinic begins.
  4. Daily performance evaluations-the student will have a daily performance evaluation completed and signed by the clinical preceptor every day when the student is in clinic-no exceptions!
  5. Affective evaluations-You must download from DataArc and place in your clinical portfolio a completed Affective Evaluation from the site where you have spend the majority (>50%) of your clinical time. Due at final check-off
  6. Site evaluations-You must download from DataArc and place in your clinical portfolio a site evaluation for every site you attend.  If you are at a hospital for airway, PFT and ICU, then three separate evaluation forms must be completed-printed and placed in your clinical portfolio.  The site evaluation must be completed on DataArc, before printing out and placing in the clinical portfolio. Due at final check-off
  7. Clinical portfolios will be presented to Ms. Gresham at the completion of your clinical rotation for evaluation.  If the clinical portfolio is not complete when turned in for review, the highest letter grade possible for clinic will drop by one!

CLINICAL PORTFOLIO FINAL CHECK-OFF June 7th by NOON.  NO EXCEPTIONS

Attendance Requirements

Attendance at clinical sites is an essential component of the student’s clinical education. The student must be in their assigned area of

rotation and prepared for instruction at the scheduled time for that rotation.


Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
