To describe the settlement and evolution of early America, from the first inhabitants (Native Americans) to 1783 (end of the American Revolution). Social, political, and economic development will be emphasized.
There are 2 reading quizes, a midterm and a Final. The reading quizes are mostly short answers; the midterm and Final stress essays. All are graded on a 90%-80%-70%-60% scale, with some moderate curving possible. There is also a term paper, about 8-12 pages long.
Tests are done in class, on days announced in advance. Term papers are submitted on date indicated in syllabus handed out in class (in 2012, November).
Late papers are permitted with the approval of the instructor. Within a few days of announced schedule, and with approval, no penalty. Papers over a week late will be penalized.
Attendance is expected; roll is taken. Excellent attendance produced a modest bonus.
Recording devices permitted, except at test times. No electronic devices (iphone, notebook, etc.) permitted during test.
