Course Objectives

 

Course Description: Applications of algebra and trigonometry to the study of elementary functions and their graphs including polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions. Each student must have a graphing calculator. This course is intended for students planning to take MATH 1634 (Calculus I).


Course Expectations

 

Textbook: PreCalculus An Integrated Approach by Knox, May, Mitchell, and Tucker     

You are also required to have a graphing calculator and bring it and your textbook to class every day.  You are not allowed to use a TI-86 or higher on exams.


Grading Standards

 

Grading: The student’s final grade will be calculated out of a total of 650 points.  The breakdown of points is as follows:

 

            quizzes            (10 pts each)                          100 points      

            exams  (100 pts each)                         400 points

            final exam                                            150 points

            total                                                     650 points

Attendance Requirements

 

Attendance policy: Although attendance does not count as a specific number of points out of your final grade, class attendance is still required.  Attendance will be taken at every class.  Any student who is late to class or who leaves early may be counted absent.   This will result in a zero on any quiz or other assignment for the day.  Any student who misses 7 or more classes may be dropped from the course.


Other Policies

 

Homework: Homework is not counted as a specific part of your grade and will not be collected on a regular basis.  However, quiz and exam problems are based on homework problems, so it would benefit you to complete every homework assignment.  Dr. Knox will answer questions concerning homework due that day at the beginning of each class.  Dr. Knox reserves the right to collect homework at any time.

 

 

Quizzes: There will be 12 quizzes given throughout the course, each worth 10 points.  Only 10 of the quizzes will count toward your final grade—the lowest 2 quiz scores will be dropped at the end of the semester.  For this reason, make-up quizzes will not be given.


Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
