Course Objectives

patterns and sequences, sets, the structure of various numeration systems, the four fundamental operations of arithmetic, integers, rational numbers, decimals, ratio and proportion, percents, real numbers, and elementary number theory.  This course stresses conceptual understanding of mathematics through concrete examples, models, multiple representations of ideas and concepts, and processes of mathematical reasoning.


Course Expectations

Quizzes will be given at the beginning of the hour.   Homework may be collected during the semester.  Late work will not be accepted.  If a student misses an hour exam, he must notify the instructor prior to the next class period.  No make-up exams will be given after the next class period.

 

The Arithmetic Proficiency Test consists of twenty questions dealing with basic arithmetic skills needed to teach elementary/middle school mathematics.  A passing grade of 75 % must be earned in order to earn any credit for this component of the course grade.  A study guide will be provided to help students prepare for this test.  The first APT will be given in class..  The second test will be given outside of class.

 

Exams will be given during class. 


Grading Standards

4 hour exams - 60%

Quizzes           - 13 %

Arithmetic Proficiency Test - 7%

Final Exam - 20%


Submission Format Policy

The final exam and all other exams will be taken in class.



Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Late Paper Policy

Late assignments are not accepted.


Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Contacting your Instructor All instructors in the Department have voicemail in their offices and MWSU e-mail addresses. Make sure you add your instructor's phone number and e-mail address to both email and cell phone lists of contacts.

Attendance Requirements

Attendance at all classes is expected.  Excused absences (eg. doctor's appointment, university activity) must be documented.  A student  with four or more unexcused absences will lose five points from the course total for every absence in excess of four.   If a student needs to leave class prior to the dismissal of class, he/she must have the permission of the instructor.  If the student has not received permission prior to leaving class early, the student will be counted absent for that class period and any work done during class or handed in will not be graded.  If a student leaves class early a second time, he/she will be required to conference with the instructor and the department chair.  A third offense will result in a referral to the dean of students and the student may be dropped from the course.

Excused absences are allowed only for emergencies.  A student who accumulates more than 4 absences prior to the last day to withdraw from the course is subject to dismissal from class with a grade of F.  Any student with more than six absences at the end of the semester is subject to a letter grade reduction in the course average.


Other Policies

Make-up exams may be given at the instructor’s discretion for any absence that is the result of a documented medical or personal emergency or an approved university activity.  It is the responsibility of the student to notify the instructor in a timely manner.  Make-up exams must be taken prior to the class period following the missed exam. 

 

All cell phones must be turned off or set to silent.  If a student is caught text-messaging during class, it will be assumed that he/she is cheating and he/she will receive an "F" on the day's assignment/quiz/exam.

Excessive cell phone use may result in confiscation of the phone.  A student may retrieve the phone after conferencing with the instructor or the department chair.

MP3 players may not be used during class.

The student handbook defines academic dishonesty as giving or receiving help in examinations or quizzes, using unauthorized material on exams or presenting as one’s own work any work which is not one’s own. If a student is dishonest on an exam, quiz or homework assignment, the student will receive a zero on the assignment/quiz/exam. In addition, the student will be asked to sign a letter outlining the incident. A copy of the letter will be placed in the student’s file in the Dean of Student’s office.


Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
