Course Objectives
  1. Students will relate contemporary issues concerning teaching and learning to their teaching practice (1,2)[online discussion, literature review, position paper].
  2. Students will explore the philosophical and theoretical foundations of contemporary school reform efforts (1,2) [online discussion, literature review, position paper].
  3. Students will investigate recent school reform movements (1,2) [literature review].
  4. Students will learn the role of educational research in school reform (4) [literature review].
  5. Students will learn the role of teachers and educators in school reform (5) [online discussion, literature review].
  6. Students will participate in professional dialogues focusing on "trends and issues in teaching and learning" (5) [online discussion].


Course Expectations

The class expectations are that the student participates to the fullest extent, completes course readings  and completes all assignments in a timely manner.

Grading Standards

Article Summaries    30 points (5 points each)

Participation in online discussions    30 points (5 points per module)            A = 90 – 100%

Position Paper    30 points                                                                              B = 80 – 89.9%

Written Responses  30 (5 points per module)                                                 C = 70 – 79.9%

Submission Format Policy

Assingments should be turned in via Blackboard. Papers should be double-spaced, in twelve point, Times New Roman font and submitted in APA format.

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Late Paper Policy

Late work is not accepted.

Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements

As this is an online course, no attendance is required. However, regular and timely participation in online discussions and on-time submission of other assignments are required.

Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
