Nature of the Course: To improve formal and informal speaking skills
The Principles of Communication are to inform, to shape and to move others; we are equally informed, molded, and are moved by others. Our success in these everyday situations often depends upon how effectively we Speak and how carefully we Listen.
In Fundamentals of Speech our focus is to Emphasis your ability in Preparing the speech as well as Understanding and Learning, how to Tailor a speech Objectives and Purposes to real world settings. Often students feel that if you can talk you can be a speaker. Social talking is much different then speaking at a meeting, talking to a perspective boss for an interview, or giving a toast at a wedding or even preparing for a demonstration with fliers, or preparing a demo posters or a power point. You must put on your façad or mask like an actor and adapt to each situation that will come to you in Life.
Speech Fundamentals Objectives: The student speaker must speak clearly and audibly and must speak on the assigned topic. The Student speaker must know how to prepare, organize and rewrite a speech and must realize that a written or oral speeches is revised and is edited before it is spoken.
The Student:must write the speech before giving it and this must be approved by the instructor.
must speak from a correct outline on 3 x 5 cards.
must know the correct form for outlining a speech.
must know how to use the 3x5 cards at the podium.
must know how to speak Extemporaneously.
must know how to Introduce a fellow classmate.
must know how to give an Informative Speech.
must know how to give a Speech to Persuade.
must know how To Communicate, to individuals or collective members of a small group.
must know the many types of Introductions and Conclusions in a speech.
must know where and how to use a Thesis and Three reasons.
must know what Transitions are and how to use them in between paragraphs in a speech.
must know how to Find Sources.
must find sources that go along with your thought process of informative or a persuasive speech.
must know how to place these sources in a speech.
must know you, the speaker, is not a credible source. Never use "I believe", "My thoughts are".
must know how not to plagiarize a passage.
Must know how to paraphrase a passage.
must know the correct procedure of using and constructing a poster, power point and overheads.
must know how to move away from the podium.
must know how to use their hands during a speech.
Must know all Gestures are above the podium and at chest level.
must know how to dress for a speech.
must recognize the importance of the audience and to have eye contact with them.
must analyze and evaluate oral and written work.
must realize the audience has an attitude and opinions.
must understand the process of Listening.
must know the speaking code of Ethics.
The Audience Member must:
Sit still and listen.
No Talking.
No e-mail or taking pictures or text message during a speech.
Take note on the speech.
Know the common barriers of listening.
Know the purpose of an Informative, Persuasive and Group Discussion speech.
Know to concentrate and have respect for the speaker.
Know the evaluation process and evaluate the speakers.
Rules of the classroom and the Midwestern State University:
By enrolling at Midwestern State University a student assumes the responsibility for becoming familiar with and abiding by the general rules of conduct. Please read the student code of conduct in the student handbook.
Class time: Class begins: 12:00=Noon and ends at 12:50.
Do not be late to class. Make sure you sign the attendance sheet upon entering the classroom. One comment: "Being to class on time is Not getting to class 5 or 10 seconds late or 20 minutes late and saying you are "sorry". If you are late please write down the time you came into the class.
** Two late entries is counted as one absent.
** If you leave early it is counted as one absent.
The door will be locked do not knock. I am your Boss, CEO of your company and your professor and you will disappoint me by coming in late and unprepared. I prepare the lesson for you and you give me back the same respect and hard work as I will give you.
Only 5 Absences and I drop you with an F. I always give you an e-mail saying you are getting close to the 5 absences. Please communicate with me. Reasons for being absent: "None" except for illness and I will need a Doctors note. The school only gives you 3 absences but in Mass Communication, we give you 5 absences. MWSU also gives you a "death in your immediate family" absent but not death of a friends or friend's family member absent.
Remember, you have paid for the class, you are getting paid back by attending the class, all the wonderful things you will learn and the grade you receive from your Professor.
In Classroom Rules and Regulations for Fundamentals of Speech:
You have a Calendar: Listing readings, participatory projects, speeches, mid-term, semester tests and vacations. Do not leave early for vacations or get back late. Be responsible.

1. Pick a leader (the same leader can not be this twice)
2. Pick a secretary. (The Secretary will write down all the names in the group and everything talk about and turned in at the end of the hour.)
3. Respect the leader, as he or she will tell you, the group, what needs to be accomplished.
4. The leader will introduce himself or herself and Then ask your name, Introduce yourself.
5. The Secretary writes down the name of the members, the date and what was accomplished at the meeting. This will be handed in at the end of the Hour for a grade for all in the group. For a formal agenda please see page 344-345.
6.If you are absent the day of the classroom project (participation grade) you will receive an F on that project. There is no way to make up a participation grade.
