Course Objectives

 

Given a physical system, students will model the system in state space form.
Given a physical system, students will model the system using Laplace transform and block diagram methods.
Given a system in state space form, students will determine stability using eigenvector/eigenvalue methods.
Given a system in block diagram form, students will reduce to a single transfer function representation, and analyze stability based on roots of the characteristic equation.
Given a physical system, students will design a feedback controller satisfying appropriate performance measures, for a step input.
Given a physical system, students will design a feedback controller, satisfying appropriate performance measures, for periodic (frequency) input functions.
Given a physical system, students will use root-locus methods to design stabilizing controllers that satisfy appropriate performance criteria.

 


Course Expectations

Prerequisites: MENG 4123, MENG 4203 (co-requisite)


Grading Standards

The final grade for the course will be based on the exam scores and the homework assignment scores. The lowest homework score will be dropped. All exams contribute 25% of the course grade and the homework assignments contribute 25% of the course grade. The overall average score (X) for the course is determined as follows:

 X = 25•(exam I score% + exam II score% + final exam score%)  + 25• (homework average%).

Late Paper Policy

Homework assignments must be turned in on the due date, at the beginning of class. Late assignments will be accepted for discounted credit at the discretion of the instructor.


Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements

You are expected to attend class regularly and are responsible for notes, homework assignments, and exams missed while absent.


Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
