Course Objectives

 

Course Description: Trigonometric functions, identities and equations, complex numbers.  Each student must have a graphing calculator.


Course Expectations

 

Prerequisite: MATH 1233 with a grade of C or better

 

Textbook: Trigonometry (8th edition) by Larson

            You are also required to have a graphing calculator and bring it every day to class.              You are not allowed to use a TI-89 or higher on exams.

 

Students should refer to the current MSU Student Handbook and Activities Calendar for university policies on academic dishonesty, class attendance, student rights and activities.


Grading Standards

 

Grading: The student’s final grade will be calculated out of a total of 670 points.  The breakdown of points is as follows:

            attendance                                           20 points

            quizzes            (10 pts each)                          100 points      

            exams  (100 pts each)                         300 points

            final exam                                            150 points

            total                                                     570 points

 

The grading scale is     A         90%-100%      513-570 points

                                    B         80%-90%        456-512 points

                                    C         70%-80%        399-455 points

                                    D         60%-70%        342-398 points

                                    F          less than 60%  401 points or less

Attendance Requirements

 

Attendance policy: Attendance is calculated out of 20 points.  The point breakdown is:  

 

number of absences:                0-1       2          3          4  or more                                   points for attendance:                      20        15        8          0                     

 

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of every class.  Any student who is late or who leaves early may be counted as absent. This will result in a zero on any quiz or other assignment for the day. Any student who misses 6 or more classes may be dropped from the course.


Other Policies

 

Homework: Homework is not counted as a specific part of your grade and will not be collected on a regular basis.  However, quiz and exam problems are based on homework problems, so it would benefit you to complete every homework assignment. Dr. Knox  reserves the right to collect homework at any time.

 

Quizzes: There will be twelve quizzes given throughout the semester, each worth 10 points.  Only ten of the quizzes will count toward your final grade—the lowest two quiz scores will be dropped at the end of the semester.  For this reason, make-up quizzes will not be given for any reason.

 

Exams: There will be three exams and a final exam.  The dates of the three exams are:

            Monday, April 29, 2013

                       

The date of the final exam is Monday, May 6, 2013, 5:45pm-7:45pm. The final exam is comprehensive. 

 

Make-up exams are given at the discretion of Dr. Knox.  If an exam is missed, every effort must be made by the student to notify Dr. Knox as soon as possible.  (A phone call to Dr. Knox is better than an email in this situation.)    NOTE: You are not allowed to use a TI-89 or higher on exams.

 

 

Additional Assistance: You are welcome to stop by Dr. Knox’s office at any time during office hours if you have questions or need extra help with this course.  Also, the math department offers help sessions in Bolin 101.  The hours are

            Monday-Thursday 2:00-5:00pm and Friday 2:00-4:00pm.

 

NOTE: Dr. Knox will be working in the math help lab—date and time to be announced.

Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
