Course Objectives

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The focus of this lecture course is to educate the respiratory care student in the principles and practices used in pulmonary rehab programs. Topics include but are not limited to, organization and management, candidate assessment and selection, patient and family education, smoking intervention techniques, role of home and alternate care sites, and reimbursement for services.

Semester Examinations and the Final Examination:In-class tests that will consist of definitions, multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, or essay type questions.

Professional Development Project:

Toward the end of the course, lecture time will be reserved for student groups to present a formal educational lecture. This educational presentation will be expected to last 15 to 20 minutes. Each student should be well versed in the subject matter being presented. The instructor and their fellow students will evaluate each presentation. Each group will present a different topic. Make sure the instructor approves your topic before beginning to collect information. You will be graded, at minimum, on the following categories:

Organization

Professional Attire

Verbal Communication

Knowledge of Subject Matter

Stays on Time (15-20 minutes)

Ability to Answer Questions

Effective Use of Media (some form of media is required)

Each student will submit a single typed sheet of paper that contains several possible exam questions; include multiple choice, true/false and short answer type questions as a component of the project.

Late Paper Policy

MISSED EXAM POLICY

If a student is going to miss an examination, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor prior to the exam to arrange with the instructor to make up the missed exam. A 5% reduction will be taken for each day after the scheduled exam date. The professor reserves the right to make unscheduled exams essay in nature and considerably more challenging.

Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular class attendance is required. No distinction is made between excused and unexcused absences unless the absence has been cleared through the office of the Dean of Students, Athletic Department or Academic Affairs. If a student misses a lecture, it is the student’s responsibility to work with other class members to determine what material was missed. Please refer to the MSU Student Handbook for more information.

Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
