This course is an introductory class in the appreciation of jazz and rock music through the study of the history of the two styles and how they have influenced the lives of nearly everyone.
It is not simply a listening class, although much of the time will be spent listening to examples of the music styles, along with discussion of the music.
Attend class and participate where appropriate.
Two listening assignments over jazz stylistic periods.
Three tests, two over jazz and one over rock and roll.
A short paper over some area of the class that is interesting to the student.
Additional listening and attendance at live music events as merited and assigned.
Grading based on the three test scores (100 points each) , listening assignments, (25 points each), writing assignment (50 points).
Extra credit can be earned to add to point total. Absences can subtract from point total.

Students are responsible for signing a roll sheet each class period.
Beginning with 5th absence, 5 points are deducted from final point total.
Student may be dropped after 8 absences.
