Course Objectives

 

Students will:

  1. Learn the rudiments of conducting research in the counseling field.
  2. Gain skills to critically analyze research articles in the field.
  3. Conduct a review of literature related to research project.
  4. Learn to articulate a critical review of previous research and the need for specific additional investigations.
  5. Plan the methodology for a research project.
  6. Evaluate fellow student’s research plans and review the quality of writing for research papers.
  7. Take responsibility for and devote whatever time is necessary to

meet the standards of writing appropriate for Master’s level work.

8.   Meet APA guidelines for professional writing.

  1. Complete the first three chapters for a file paper required for

graduation.

  1. Write chapter 4, at least in rough draft form based on a pilot study.
  2. Present proposed research both orally and in writing for faculty

      review.

  1. Be prepared to carry out research for file paper following the course.
  2. Be prepared to consult with chosen research committee for final written paper describing the research project and its results.

Course Expectations

 

Students will demonstrate in class discussion and in writing, the following qualities:

  1. Critical thinking.
  2. Considerations of multiple points of view.
  3. Appreciation of professional literature.
  4. Capacity to clearly express the appropriate application of research findings in counseling practice.
  5. An understanding of the complexities of conducting research.
  6. An appreciation of clear, well organized writing and a commitment to produce such writing in professional practice. 
  7. Capacity to give and receive feedback regarding professional work.

Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements

 

Attendance is crucial and is reflective of professional motivation and class participation that can not be made up. Even unavoidable (illness, family emergency, dangerous weather) absences affect attendance grade. Any more than two unavoidable absences necessitate special arrangements for completion of the course.  One avoidable absence counts as two unavoidable absences as reflected in participation grade.  Two avoidable absences require withdrawal from the class.


Other Policies

 

Professor will keep papers in her files for one semester only; afterward files are destroyed. Papers sent by e-mail will not be held on computer.

 

The inappropriate use of these devices can be quite disturbing.  Either turn these devices off or set to “ring” silently.  If there is a compelling need, use these devices as unobtrusively as possible. If you are expecting an urgent call, keep your phone handy, not buried. Take all calls outside of the classroom.


Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
