Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, a student will:

    • Describe quantitative and qualitative research, as well as literature reviews;
    • Critically analyze research; and
    • Construct components of research in correct APA format.

Course Expectations

Students must have reliable and continual computer and Internet access. All course activities, including the exams and final exam, will be completed use WebCT.

Please note that the research question you use for this course, RADS 3503, is the question that you must write your literature review on for RADS 4913, Applied Research!

Unit Assignments

Unit 1:

·Complete Unit 1 Quiz. You must make at least an 85 on the quiz and you have an unlimited number of attempts. The highest score will be accepted for the activity grade.

·Complete the Research Topic Worksheet and submit it to Unit 1 Research Topic assignment dropbox.

·Create a document (Word, PPT, Video, etc.) that answers the questions identified below. Post your document to Unit 1 MSU Library discussion forum and provide a meaningful response to one peer’s post. Be sure to be active in both yours and your peer’s discussion. This means to both ask questions and answer questions that are asked of you.

  • How do you access MSU’s library?
  • What resources does MSU’s library have for distance education students?
  • What is a database? What are some good databases for radiology?
  • How do you search for articles using MSU’s library sources, specifically the databases?
  • What is ILL? How do you get access to articles with this designation?
  • How do you know if there is a fee for an article or if access is free?
  • How do you know if an article is available full-text?
  • Who is MSU’s radiology-designated reference librarian?
  • Formulate a reference list in correct APA format for FOUR articles based on your research topic. Submit the reference list to Unit 1 Reference List discussion forum. Select one peer’s submission to review and critique. If a submission already has a review, select another submission. Each submission must have one peer review. Use the Unit 1 Reference List Critique form to provide your review. The grade for the activity will be based on both your reference list submission and your review of a peer’s submission.

Unit 2:

·Complete Unit 2 Quiz.

·Locate and evaluate the two identified research articles (full text) applying the principles covered in the course textbooks. Complete the Unit 2 Article Critique worksheet and submit it to the Unit 2 Article Critique assignment dropbox.

Unit 3:

  • Complete the Research Question Development worksheet and submit it to the Unit 3 Research Question Development assignment dropbox.
  • Develop a reference list of 10 articles in APA (6th ed.) format. The articles should be based on your research question. Submit it to the Unit 3 Reference List assignment dropbox.

·Based on your research question and your reference list, construct a methodology section to include the following: databases used, search terms, methods for article inclusion, and limiters. Provide your written response in the submission box of the Unit 3 Methodology assignment dropbox.

  • Evaluate one article identified on the reference list submitted previously. Complete the Final Article Critique worksheet and submit to the Unit 3 Article Critique discussion forum. You must also post the article you used. Using the grade criteria supplied, critique one peer’s submission. The grade for the activity will be based on both your reference list submission and your review of a peer’s submission.

Final Project:

This will be a portfolio to demonstrate what you have learned throughout the semester. You must first read Pan (2008). It is an easy read, and is basically a large set of guidelines to preparing a literature review. You will be researching and writing a literature review in RADS 4913, so this exercise will further prepare you for that task.  Prepare the portfolio in a single Word document. Submit the document and any required files to the Final Project dropbox.

From each chapter, complete the identified exercises; however, you may complete more.

a.  When applicable, provide the required files. For example, Chapter 5 requires you to review an article. You must also provide the article you used to complete the exercises.

b. You may also provide additional evidence of achievement as you feel necessary.

Prepare an essay which fully answers the following:

What has been most helpful in this course?

What have you learned the most about in this course?

What do you feel you need to learn more about, or need more help with?

How prepared do you feel for RADS 4913? Explain your answer.

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Late Paper Policy

Assignments must be submitted by the due dates indicated at the end of the syllabus. Due to the nature of the course, late assignment submissions will not be accepted. Students who do not submit assignments before the deadlines listed on the Course Schedule at the end of this syllabus will receive a grade of zero for the missed assignment.

Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Student Honor Creed

As an MSU Student, I pledge not to lie, cheat, steal, or help anyone else do so."

As students at MSU, we recognize that any great society must be composed of empowered, responsible citizens. We also recognize universities play an important role in helping mold these responsible citizens. We believe students themselves play an important part in developing responsible citizenship by maintaining a community where integrity and honorable character are the norm, not the exception. Thus, We, the Students of Midwestern State University, resolve to uphold the honor of the University by affirming our commitment to complete academic honesty. We resolve not only to be honest but also to hold our peers accountable for complete honesty in all university matters. We consider it dishonest to ask for, give, or receive help in examinations or quizzes, to use any unauthorized material in examinations, or to present, as one's own, work or ideas which are not entirely one's own. We recognize that any instructor has the right to expect that all student work is honest, original work. We accept and acknowledge that responsibility for lying, cheating, stealing, plagiarism, and other forms of academic dishonesty fundamentally rests within each individual student. We expect of ourselves academic integrity, personal professionalism, and ethical character. We appreciate steps taken by University officials to protect the honor of the University against any who would disgrace the MSU student body by violating the spirit of this creed. Written and adopted by the 2002-2003 MSU Student Senate.

Students with Disabilities The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal anti-discrimination statute that provides comprehensive civil rights protection for persons with disabilities. Among other things, this legislation requires that all students with disabilities be guaranteed a learning environment that provides for reasonable accommodation of their disabilities. If you believe you have a disability requiring an accommodation, please contact the Disability Support Services in Room 168 of the Clark Student Center, 397-4140.

Safe Zones Statement The professor considers this classroom to be a place where you will be treated with respect as a human being - regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, political beliefs, age, or ability. Additionally, diversity of thought is appreciated and encouraged, provided you can agree to disagree. It is the professor's expectation that ALL students consider the classroom a safe environment.

Contacting your Instructor All instructors in the Department have voicemail in their offices and MWSU e-mail addresses. Make sure you add your instructor's phone number and e-mail address to both email and cell phone lists of contacts.

Attendance Requirements

This is an online course and there are no mandatory sessions.  However, the student should be vigilant in logging onto WebCT.  Regular checks will ensure that messages from the instructor are received in a timely manner. This course is on a schedule that will be strictly adhered to.

Other Policies

Honor System: RADS 3503 adheres to the MSU Code of Conduct.  In particular, academic dishonesty, however small, creates a breach in academic integrity.  A student’s participation in this course comes with the expectation that his or her work will be completed in full observance of the MSU Code of Student Conduct.  A student should consult the course syllabus and current Student Handbook for answers to any questions about the code.

Academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism, etc.) will not be tolerated in this class. Whenever a student is unsure of whether a particular situation will be interpreted as academic dishonesty, he/she should ask the instructor for clarification.  If students are guilty of academic dishonesty, a grade of zero (0) may be given for the quiz, assignment, etc.  Cases may also be referred to the Dean of Students for possible dismissal from the university.
