COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course prepares students to critique research literature for appropriateness and utilization in nursing practice. Emphasis is placed on increasing knowledge and skills related to the development and evaluation of research proposals. Both quantitative and qualitative methodologies are explored.

LEARNING EXPERIENCES: The students will engage in a variety of learning experiences including online discussions, quizzes, readings, and preparation of a review of literature pertinent to the question(s) to be answered in an Evidence Based Practice Paper.

(3) RN to MSN students must earn a B or greater in order to receive graduate credit for this course. A grade of C will result in credit awarded toward the undergraduate degree, and the student will be moved from the RN to MSN program into the RN to BSN program if continuation at MSU is desired.

Timely submission of all assignments is required. In the event that a student needs an extension due to compelling circumstances, this is to be discussed well in advance of the due date. Late assignments will receive a 5 point per day reduction in score except in emergent circumstances; it is important to note that a late submission date must be negotiated in advance except in an emergent circumstances.
It is likely you will be asked to submit the work completed to date so that faculty can see that an effort has been made to complete the assignment and that the emergency is not poor planning. Each week starts on Mondays and ends on Sundays. Most assignments are due Sundays at 10 pm unless noted otherwise (See course calendar)

Ideas for Selection of an Evidence-Based Intervention for Practice
1. Describe a Clinical Problem that you see or have seen in your practice. It can be any patient care problem or issue that is of interest to you in your current practice, or for your future role as an administrator, nurse practitioner, or educator. Be sure your idea is in your current scope of practice to “keep it real”. For example avoid an intervention regarding a prescribed medication since that is not usually a part of your current clinical practice and you are unlikely unable to influence such a change. A way to identify an area of interest may be to ask yourself or colleagues questions such as: Is there a better way of doing something? Would another intervention be more effective and improve patient outcomes? Give some data (at least one rate, ratio or cost) from your agency or from the health care literature that supports the fact that this is a patient care problem. Share your final PICO question you have developed.
2. Review recent research and practice literature and select an intervention that might address this patient care issue. The intervention may be in the form of a clinical practice guideline, a new policy, a new or amended protocol, an algorithm or procedure that would improve patient care. You must be able to support your evidence-based intervention to improve current care in terms of patient, provider, or health care agency outcomes. Try to identify something for which you really want an answer. You might also get ideas from Research for Practice, an ongoing section in AJN, or research articles from nursing specialty journals.
3. Review a variety of evidence-based websites such as those in your textbook and on our course Web link site.
4. Summarize what is known and not known about the problem area selected.
5. Appraise the quality of the existing research on the problem/intervention. This is done through your appraisal table and through your discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of available research.
6. Identify, revise, or develop a policy, protocol, algorithm or procedure to be used in your practice site.
7. Provide a copy of the clinical practice guideline, policy, protocol, algorithm, or procedure with its references. (This may be uploaded as an extra attachment as needed)(example: Leach.AttachA)
8. Provide an appropriately APA reference list for your paper.

A. Provide a copy of the documented protocol, algorithm, or standardized guideline.
B. Discuss the protocol, algorithm, or standardized guideline you might use in your later EBP project . Indicate if you will develop the protocol or algorithm; revise it from an agency document; use a document that was previously published; or use a national standardized guideline found in the literature or on the WEB. If it is based on existing document, include a copy of this document. Briefly identify any revisions you anticipate making to the existing document.

Limit the paper to 10 pages (including references). Use font size 12, one inch margins, and double spacing. Add your appraisal table at the end of your paper. It will not count in your maximum 10 pages.
