The student will learn the universal molecular processes underlying biological functions.
The student will learn the basic methods used to bioengineer organisms.
The student will be introduced to the field of bioinformatics.
The student will be introduced to the major model organisms of molecular biology.
The student will develop skills in technical writing.
The student will complete Critical Thinking Exercises for each chapter beginning with Chapter 3. Submission may be direct or by e-mail attachment. [15%]
The student will complete four examinations (including the final examination) of equal weight [70%].
The student will prepare a term paper reporting on a contemporary process or phenomenon that is not addressed in the course. [15%] The term paper will be completed in stages with partial credit based on the quality of each work product .
Subject selection in consultation with instructor by September 17 [10%]
Submission of complete first draft by October 29 [25%]
Submission of a final draft by November 19 [optional]
Submission of final paper by December 3 [65%]
Answers to Critical Thinking Exercises and essay questions on examinations will be well-conceived, clear, concise and responsive to the questions. Answers earning full credit will reflect writing skills expected of upper level students.
Examinations will be administered on the days indicated on the course syllabus. Individual exceptions to this schedule will be considered on a case-by-case basis and will be permitted only in the case of truly exceptional circumstances. Scheduled activities such as doctor or dentist appointments are not truly exceptional circumstances.
Critical Thinking Exercises submitted after the deadline will lose 10% for each day past the deadline.
Students are expected to attend all meetings of the classes in which they are enrolled.
University policies concerning academic dishonesty, classroom conduct and grounds for an instructor-initiated drop from the course will apply to this course. These policies may be reviewed in the student handbook.
