This course provides students the opportunity to work in an environment which closely simulates a real workplace environment. The students will work in groups composed of three to four members from diverse backgrounds, with diverse skills and capabilities. The projects are devised by the faculty and assigned to the students in the first week of the semester. Each group will carry out a project from brainstorming (A) to product fabrication (Z). The instructor in charge of the student groups is there to guide them, advise them and supervise them. The instructor is not there to do the students’ work. The instructor expects the students to behave professionally and appropriately throughout the duration of the project. Any student caught using foul language, making derogatory remarks in writing through emails or verbally in class may be dismissed from it. A complete dismissal from class for the reminder of the semester may occur if the offenses proffered by the student are considered very serious by the instructor. Not attending or arriving late to scheduled lectures, labs, and meetings may cost the student the full attitude grade (30%).
Each student will receive from the instructor a personal requirements sheet outlining the project main substance and specifying all the expected deliverable toward the end of the semester.
Any changes in the project design and drawings discussed with other faculty members and/or the department machinist/technician must be reported immediately to the instructor in charge of the group who will then decide on whether to adopt these changes or not.
It is also brought to the attention of the students that each one of them is expressly required to participate in all senior design presentations (partial and final), and toward the end of the spring semester in two of these university activities: University Colloquium, North Texas Area Students Conference (NTASC 2014), and IdeaMSU. The students are required to start preparing for these activities in this fall semester (draft poster, draft oral presentation, etc…).
Attitude and Peer Evaluation
The attitude of each member of the group is going to be assessed throughout the semester by the instructor. The assigned grade will be based on absenteeism, time on tasks, punctuality, language, willingness to work with team members, instructor, and technician/machinist, general behavior as specified in the general information section, and more as deemed appropriate by the instructor.
At the end of the semester each group member will be asked to grade his/her peer based on his/her performance during the design process. The general attitude of the student counts for 25% of the total grade and the peer evaluation counts for 5% of the total grade. The total grade percentage allocated to the attitude and peer evaluation is 30%.
There will be three regular short exams during the semester on the lecture materials. Each exam is closed book and based on the materials presented during the lecture. The three exams are mandatory and count for 8% of the total course grade.
Weekly Progress Reports and Log Books
Each group member is responsible for keeping a log book containing a list of all the activities performed by him during the week. These log books will be used by the group members to draft a single weekly progress report. The weekly progress report must be turned-in the form of a memorandum containing a list of activities completed, activities not completed, activities planned, and a 1-2 page narrative of the progress made by the group during the week and any issue encountered during the weekly activities. In the progress report the group has also to provide all weekly collected technical documents related to their project (technical sheets, drawings, SolidWorks Simulations, electrical schematic, etc…). From time-to-time the instructor will collect the log book for inspection and grading purposes.
These weekly progress reports will be reviewed and returned to the students by the instructor on a weekly basis. Each group has to provide a soft and a hard copy of the weekly progress report to the instructor.
Weekly reports are expressly due at the beginning of each laboratory session. If not timely submitted, they will still be accepted for a grace period of 48 hours but graded over 80% of the regular 100% grade. After the grace period, weekly reports will still be accepted and graded over 60% of the regular 100% grade. Each group is responsible for submitting one weekly common report. Participation of all group members is required and mandatory in writing the weekly reports.
Brainstorming and Design Concept (First Deadline: End of September 2013)
Within the first few weeks after the start of the semester, by a date specified by the instructor toward the end of September, each group will submit a proposal report about its assigned senior design project and give an oral presentation. The report and the oral presentation feature the outcomes of the brainstorming sessions done by the group during the aforementioned period and articulate the adopted project design concepts. The grade for the report and the oral presentation is based on each group member own efforts.
Preliminary Design for parts and assemblies (Second Deadline: End of October 2013)
Based on the design concept outlined in the previous period a defined set of preliminary design calculations and drawings for parts and assemblies is required for this step. By a date specified by the instructor toward the end of October, each group through an oral presentation will present and submit to the instructor a draft set of the preliminary design calculations and drawings for parts and assemblies. The grade for all designs is based on each group member own efforts.
Final Design with Budget and quotes (Third Deadline: Beginning of December 2013)
Toward the end of the semester, on December 2nd, 2013, each group will submit a final major draft report containing the final design calculations, drawings for parts and assemblies with budget, quotes, realization timeline, references, and appendices. The instructor will review the draft report write his own final recommendations for the final report, and turn it to the students. The students are required to submit the final report by December 9th, 2013. A general template of the report will be sent to the students during the second week of class. While a working prototype of the design is due by the end of the academic year (May 2014), each group is required this fall semester to produce and show a computer based design (2-D drawings, and 3-D drawings) and simulation of different (stress, frequency, fatigue, etc.) solutions of its assigned project. Note: while many software tools can be used to develop a computer simulation, the most desirable one is SolidWorks, since this software is available in almost every computer in the department. Also the report has to address all the requirements specified in the handout personal sheet distributed by the instructor at the beginning of the semester for each student. The group is also required to give an oral presentation to an audience composed of the instructor, the department faculty, students, and possibly members from the Military and/or the industry. The oral presentation is scheduled December 11th and 12th, 2013. The end of the semester report as well as the final oral presentation will be graded by the instructor, the department faculty, and eventually members from the military and/or the industry. The grade for the report and the oral presentation is based on each group member own efforts.

Students are required to attend lectures and labs on regular basis.
Lecture and Lab Attendance
This course consists of a one-hour lecture and four-hour design laboratory sessions per week. The one hour lecture session includes a short talk by the instructor, and a general discussion of the projects progression (weekly assignments, difficulties, needs, and issues). The lab time will be spent by the groups working on their projects on their own and under the supervision of the instructor and sometimes when needed the technician/machinist. The students are required to attend the whole lab session each Wednesday from 2:00 pm to 5:50 pm and wait for their turn to meet with the instructor. It is brought to the attention of the students that the lab-time is not sufficient to complete all required weekly tasks. The students have to manage their own study schedule and find time to complete all required tasks. In this first semester the students are required to submit their final design report with all the required deliverables specified in the project personal requirement sheet.
GENERAL EDUCATION STATEMENT
Students in this course must demonstrate their competency in oral and written communication through oral and written project tasks assignments. They must also demonstrate their ability to use the English language.
