Students develop musicianship and performance skills through individual applied lessons on their major instrument. Students receive weekly lessons of 1 hour throughout the semester and play an end of semester jury to earn a grade. Students are required to perform solo on one Monday recital and one additional performance TBA.
Grading: You will receive 14 weekly lesson grades throughout the semester, in addition to a semester jury grade. You will also earn points towards your grade by completing the Monday recital and the additional performance.
Your grade will be calculated out of 200 points.

Lesson Preparedness: To reach a high level of playing, at least 10-12 hours per week of practice is needed. Practicing involves careful attention to tone, intonation, rhythm, phrasing, vibrato, right and left-hand technique, and posture. Time spent in ensemble rehearsals does not count towards weekly practice.
You are expected to be on time to the weekly lessons. Tardiness results in a lower lesson grade, and missing a lesson results in a zero. If a student calls or emails last-minute to cancel a lesson, that also counts as a zero. Lessons may be rescheduled at instructor’s discretion, usually for an academic-related conflict or an emergency.
An atmosphere of professionalism is expected at lessons. You must adhere to a “business casual” dress code. A handout is available to explain “business casual” if needed.
