Course Objectives

Learning Goals

General Learning Goals


            Competency in writing about common business scenarios

Students will write several research papers and relate course concepts to their future careers.


            Students will have an understanding of the influence of global and multicultural issues

            on business activities

            Global aspects relating to organizational culture is throughout the text and is related to nearly all concepts

            covered.  Many case studies are geared toward investigating international issues. 


Students will demonstrate proficiency working with different technologies: Students will give prepare their research papers using online article databases, use a word processing program to prepare and edit their papers.  Additionally, students will have the option to present their paper orally using recording technology and editing software.  Additionally, this course heavily utilizes D2L and CourseMate, which are both unique technologies which will prepare students for novel technology systems encountered in the workplace.  All quizzes and exams are administered online, and all lectures, the syllabus, and other course documents are exclusively distributed via D2L which forces students to practice using this technology.

·         To learn to think like a manager as you use OB theories to solve business problems

·         To learn to understand the behavior of yourself and others around you through self-reflection and feedback

Course Expectations

Graded Course Components

            First Week Assignments

During the first week of class, we will have assignments that are designed to familiarize you with the programs we will be using during the class.  Please see details of these assignments in the Assignment Information Document posted in D2L under Course Content.



There will be 4 non-cumulative exams in this course administered through Connect Plus.  You will have 80 minutes to complete each exam.  Exams will consist of multiple choice, true/false, and matching questions.  You will have one attempt at the exam and no make ups are allowed.  You may take the exam anywhere, and any time during the exam days.  Exams will open at 12:01 am on Friday morning and are due by 11:59 pm on Monday evening.  All exams must be completed within that 4 day timeframe. Please see details of the exams in the Assignment Information Document posted in D2L under Course Content.


            Connect Plus Assignments

            Each week there will be several different types of assignments in Connect Plus.  These assignments are meant to familiarize you with the material we are covering in an engaging and memorable way which should help your performance on the exams and it should help you apply the concepts to your workplace, thus providing benefits beyond the classroom.  During the first week, you will complete a tutorial about each different type of assignment layout so that you are familiar with each format type.  Connect Plus assignments will be available Monday at 12:00 am on the day we begin covering the material for the week and are due Mondays at 11:59 pm following the week we cover that chapter’s material. 


            Connect Plus Assignments

            Each week there will be a quiz in Connect Plus that is designed to be a “pre-test” of that chapter’s material.  The quizzes will be available Monday at 12:00 am on the day we begin covering the material for the week and are due Mondays at 11:59 pm following the week we cover that chapter’s material. 


            D2L Discussions

We will have weekly discussions via the discussion tool in D2L.  These discussions will be both about the content that we are covering that week in class and current issues that come from external sources.  These discussions will be graded on content, contribution, and professional writing.  These discussions are intended to allow you to explore some of the content areas we are studying in more detail and develop thoughts further about these topics with your fellow students.  Please see details of these discussions in the Assignment Information Document posted in D2L under Course Content.


Extra Credit

All students have multiple opportunities for extra credit throughout the semester by completing extra work and/or participating in course-related activities.  See the document titled “Extra Credit Opportunities” in D2L under Course Content for more information. 

Grading Standards

Grading and Evaluation

Many different tools are used to test your degree of success at achieving the different learning goals.  Here is the breakdown of points in this class:


            First Week Assignments                     45 points                                 = 45

            Exams                                                 4 @ 100 points each               = 400

            Connect Plus Assignments                 18 @ 30 points each               = 540

            Connect Plus Quizzes                         18 @ 20 points each               = 360

            D2L Discussions                                 18 @ 20 points each               = 360

                        Total Available Points                                                             = 1705


Grades will be determined on the basis of the total points earned.  Letter grades will be given according to the following scale:


                        A = 1534.5-1705 points

                        B = 1364-1535.4 points

                        C = 1193.5-1363 points

                        D = 1023-1193.4 points

                        F = less than 1023 points

Submission Format Policy


This is the University’s online platform for this course.  Students are expected to check this website for important course information, course documents, and correspondence from the instructor multiple times per week, regardless of when you actually complete your course work.  There is regular maintenance performed on D2L and the times for scheduled maintenance are posted on the first D2L page under “News” so that you can plan your work around this downtime.


Connect Plus

            This is the web-based program that complements our textbook.  Some work for the course will be completed via this site.  Multiple tools to enhance student success in achieving course learning goals are located on this website.  Connect Plus undergoes scheduled maintenance. Please note this downtime so you can complete your work around it.

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Late Paper Policy

Late Work

Professionals are not late with their work, and it will not be accepted for any reason.  This class provides you the opportunity to work at your own pace and convenience within the stated deadlines, and this mirrors trends that are becoming more frequent in the workplace.  Without traditional borders of an 8-5 workday or formal class sessions, it is up to you to establish your own work schedule and to enforce yourself with discipline for your studies.  Just like in the workplace, there will be no extension of deadlines. Life happens, and a good professional will plan for “life to happen” and still meet their deadlines.  The best way to ensure that this happens is to work ahead of the deadline instead of opting for a “just in time” approach that will put your success of each assignment at risk if you have something personal to tend to. 

Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

There are no in-class sessions for this course, however, you are expected to regularly log in to D2L and Connect Plus.  The course will follow the university attendance policy.  (See Midwestern State University Undergraduate Catalog, 2012-2014, p. 71).

A document titled “Assignment Information” is posted under Course Content in D2L.  This document provides details of all assignments for this course, including grading criteria and specific deadlines for each component.  The information contained in this document is an extension of the syllabus. 


Syllabus Change Policy

This syllabus is a general outline of material covered, learning goals, grading procedures and student performance requirements. Material covered, dates of tests, and percent of total grade may vary as necessitated by the pace material is covered and any unforeseen class interruptions such as weather cancelations, technology outages, or instructor illness. 

Academic Integrity

With regard to academic honesty, students are referred to the “Student Honor Creed” on page 19 of the Midwestern State University Undergraduate Catalog for the academic years of 2012-2014.  The professor will follow all procedures described in the Midwestern State University Student Handbook for academic year 2013-2014 for any student suspected of engaging in academic dishonesty in any manner in this course.  All assignments should be completed individually, with no help, collaboration, or assistance from other students or sources without proper citation.  Any student who engages in academic dishonesty on any assignment will receive a 0 for the assignment and/or an F for the course and may be subject further disciplinary action as per the Academic Dishonesty Procedures outlined in the 2012-2014 Graduate Catalog.

Professional Conduct

Students in this course should behave in a professional manner at all times, including interactions with fellow students and the professor.  This includes professional content, format, language, and grammar in communications regardless of communication medium.  E-mails to the instructor that are not professional will be returned unanswered and you will be asked to recompose your message. 

Course Time

This course and all related deadlines will adhere to the local time of Midwestern State University.  All dates and times are in Central Time and Daylight Savings Time is observed.  If you are completing coursework in another time zone, please note the time difference and plan accordingly. 


Weekly Deadlines

Weekly deadlines occur each Monday, and these deadlines occasionally fall on holidays and/or days when the University is closed.  Please note that these deadlines are still effective because there are multiple days to complete each assignment.  If you choose not to do coursework on a deadline, please work ahead to give yourself a holiday.  If you have concerns about a deadline conflicting with a holiday and/or closure, please contact me early in the semester so that alternate arrangements can be made.


            Other Related Policies

Only students with authorized excuses (see University Class Attendance Policy) may make up missed examinations.  Make-up exams will be administered at the professor’s discretion, and the professor reserves the right to require documentation of reason for missing an exam. 


While this course does not meet in person, it does require that you create and maintain a schedule that works for you in order to stay on track with the course requirements.  You are responsible for due dates and deadlines, and missed deadlines cannot be made up.  Each week, I will post an outline of deadlines and assignments for the week on D2L to help keep you on track.

Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
