Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
Understand principles of ionizing radiation interactions with matter based upon x-ray production theories.
Recognize the effects of ionizing radiation to human tissue at subatomic, atomic, cellular, & systemic levels.
Discuss studies regarding biologic effects of ionizing radiation on human tissue.
Differentiate between early & late effects of ionizing radiation on human tissue.
Apply radiation safety principles for patients, self, coworkers, and the general public while working as a radiographer.
Provide patient information in response to questions posed by patients regarding the radiation safety of radiologic procedures.
Use problem solving skills to determine the best radiation protection strategies to utilize when performing radiographic procedures.
Apply critical thinking skills to determine how to provide maximum radiation safety to self, patient, and the general public.
Assess patient procedure situations to determine if the patient is properly protected from radiation exposure.
Communicate with coworkers, supervisors, and physicians regarding concerns that might arise related to radiation safety in the radiology department.
Ionizing radiation can cause alterations to human cells. As radiographers we must regulate its administration to effectively protect humans from the potential for harm. This course will provide the student with an introduction to the basic concepts of radiation protection for themselves, the patient, and the general public. Emphasis will be placed on units of exposure, MPD for radiation workers & the public, safe practices, federal guidelines & rules and regulations, and radiation biology.
As a student enrolled in this course, you will be responsible for adhering to and meeting posted deadlines and due dates. All activities for this course are listed at the end of this syllabus. Activities such as quizzes have expiration dates. Please take note that expiration dates for quizzes will differ from deadlines for assignments and activities.
Quizzes and assignments/activities are spaced out in a manner that will allow you ample time to complete them. Assignments/Activities will be accepted on or before the posted due date and deadline. If you choose to wait until the very last minute and there is some problem with getting the assignment to me in time, that is the risk that you take and you must accept the penalty.

Students will complete 5 assignments during the semester. The first 2 assignments must be completed by the date posted in the tentative course schedule at the end of this syllabus. Assignments 3 and 4 must be completed by the date posted in the tentative course schedule at the end of this syllabus. Assignment 5 must be completed by the date posted in the tentative course schedule at the end of this syllabus. The assignments will be submitted to the appropriate assignment drop box.
D2L will only allow for one submission of a file. Please make sure you have submitted the completed assignment. ANY assignment submitted after the deadline will have not be accepted and receive a grade of zero (0) for that assignment. NO EXCEPTIONS. ALL assignments MUST be completed and turned in when it is due.
All assignments will be done as a Word document attachment, Times New Roman or Arial, 12 point font and double spaced with a properly formatted APA cover page. If the title page is not formatted to APA specifications, points will be deducted (refer to assignment rubrics for grading).
Assignments that require information from the World Wide Web, written sources or personal communication must be properly reference and cite the source using criteria found in the APA publication manual. Read the comments on your assignments. If the title page, citations and reference pages are not formatted to APA specifications, points will be deducted (refer to assignment rubrics for grading). You will need to refer to the sixth edition of the APA manual for proper formatting of all criteria.
If a student misses a deadline for an activity or assignment, that assignment/activity will not be graded and a grade of zero (0) will be given. Emergencies do occur and they will be dealt with on an individual basis. Do not inform me of personal emergencies after the deadlines/due dates and expiration dates have passed.
This is an on-line course. There is no attendance policy.

Specific components of RADS 3213 are designed to represent the efforts of each student individually and are NOT to be shared. These components include the written assignments submitted for a grade. Submitting someone else’s work as your own or improperly sited work constitutes plagiarism. Please see the Midwestern State University Catalog for further discussion of plagiarism. Plagiarism will constitute in an F for the course and the student will be referred to administration for further action. When students submit their efforts for grading, they are attesting they abided by this rule. Quizzes and exams are not to be copied in any form or shared in any form. Students caught engaging in such activity will receive an F for the course and be referred to University administration for dismissal.
