MW 10:00a - 10:50a in the Music Seminar Room of the Fain Fine Arts Center.
This is a skills class – you acquire skills by being in class and paying attention, practicing the pieces and drills that are assigned to you, completing the research assignment(s), and being willing to dispassionately yet critically evaluate the progress of yourself and your fellow students. From time to time I will ask you to evaluate my work and I expect you to not hold back in your evaluation of my accompanying abilities at the time.
This is a skills class; therefore, you will each progress as individually able and will be graded in like manner. It is expected that you will show up, participate, practice, perform, and progress.
You will be graded on participation (25%), preparation (25%), performance (25%), and completion of written assignments (25%). It is possible to participate only when present, so attendance in class is included in participation. Preparation is bipartite: first, it consists of the practicing on assigned pieces which you do to be ready to perform them in class. Second, it includes completing assignments (readings, reflected writings, etc.) ahead of class in order to be prepared for discussions. Performance includes playing in class, in lessons, and in recital as assigned. Performances in class may very likely consist of not-ready-for-Akin on-the-way sections, especially when a piece is long and/or of greater difficulty.
Please do not make this an issue - complete assignments (score, performance, and written work) on time. Late submission will receive partial credit and will impact your grade.
Attendance is expected and will be graded under the "participation" component.
