The study of Western classical music will continue with its development from the Baroque period, through the Classic, and into the Romantic. Recorded and score illustrations of music show stylistic development of representative composers in each period.
There are three unit tests plus the comprehensive final. Each unit test will be available for one week in D2L. You will have three attempts to take the test, and the highest grade will count. Both questions and question components are randomized, so that each time you take the test you may have different questions to answer.
The comprehensive final exam will be open in D2L starting after the last class meeting and ending at 10:00am the morning of the scheduled final exam. WE WILL MEET FOR THE FINAL!!!
There will be assignments which you must submit in D2L. After you upload assignment 1 you will have access to assignment 2, etc., ensuring that you complete all assignments. These assignments will also form the basis of part of the class discussions.
There will be one project for which you will be assigned a group. Members of the group will all receive the same grade, so please all help each other.
Grades will be based on a composite score from the following:
Quizzes 50 - includes in-class informal verbal quizzing
Concert critique 25
Recording critique 25
Written projects 50
Team class presentation 50
Exam 1 150
Exam 2 150
Exam 3 150
Final Exam (comprehensive) 250
All written projects and papers are to be submitted through the Dropbox for this class in D2L. You must submit them in Word!!!
You will be able to access all assignments through the Dropbox for this class in D2L. You will be allowed access to each subsequent assignment once you have uploaded the previous: for example, assignment 2 will be available to you only after you have completed and uploaded assignment 1.
This is a lecture course with class participation. There may be quizzes or graded discussion without advance notice that cannot be made up. Attendance will affect grading; however, over and above that it is graded, absences in excess of five (5) without substantiated reason (from a doctor or the Dean of Students’ Office) will indicate a lack of interest in the successful completion of this course and you may be asked to drop or take a failing grade for the course.
