Course Objectives

You will study of basic concepts of speech communication as applied to public speaking. You will develop skills in research, preparation, delivery, and critique of oral speeches. Skills will be demonstrated through classroom work.

Objectives:

  1. An introduction to the communication process
  2. Audience analysis as a component of the speech preparation process
  3. Topic selection and idea formulation based on speech assignments
  4. Speech organization
  5. Topic research strategies
  6. Speech delivery techniques
  7. Listening strategies
  8. Use of visual aids
  9. Managing speech anxiety

Course Expectations

By the end of this course each student should be able to:

 

  1. Demonstrate and explain the communication process
  2. Construct effective presentations based on astute audience analysis
  3. Select appropriate and effective topics for assigned presentations
  4. Organize presentations in a unified and effective manner
  5. Logically and passionately seek, acquire and utilize supporting materials for effective presentations
  6. Demonstrate effective and appropriate delivery methods
  7. Sharpen listening skills through audience participation
  8. Select and integrate appropriate visual aids into presentations for impact

Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
