In this course we first review the mathematics of linear vector spaces and Hilbert spaces, and then address one dimensional and multi-dimensional non-relativistic quantum mechanics. If time permits, we may address time independant perturbation theory and other approximation methods.
Expectations: Students are expected to attend class regularly; the instructor will present the material and do some example problems. Short homework assignments will be given most classes. Students are expected to remain current with the assignments.
90% or higher: A
80% - 89.99%: B
70% - 79.99%: C
60% - 69.99%: D
below 60%: F
The instructor reserves the right to scale grades on exams as needed.
Homework: Homework assignments may be submitted late. However, please note that approximately 50% of the homework grade is based on the quality of the submitted work, with the rest being awarded for submitting the work in a timely manner. Homework assignments have a set due date, listed on the assignment, and any assignment submitted at or before the start of the next class after the due date will be considered on time. (It is recommended that students submit all assignments on the due date.) Assignments submitted after that time will have credit reduced by approximately 5% per class session late.
Students may request extensions on homework assignments. All reasonable extension requests (at the discretion of the instructor) will be granted if requested in advance of the due date. Requests made after the due date require exceptional circumstances.
While attendance is not factored into your grade, it is expected that students will attend class regularly. If there are exceptional circumstances, please speak with the instructor. Tests may only be made up with an excused absence or notification of illness, considered on a case by case basis. Discussion of planned absences in advance is preferred.
A portion of the grade is based on participation, and it is of course impossible to participate if you are not present. However, it is not necessary to ask a lot of questions to earn full participation points - listening is also participating.
Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. Homework exercises may be worked in groups; however, each student is expected to understand the material they submit, and not simply copy the work of another student.
