Course Expectations

Pre-requisites:            NURS 3863:  Concepts in Caring for the Pediatric Client; NURS 3873:  Concepts in Mental Health Care; NURS 3882:  Service Learning 1; NURS 3503: Nursing Research; NURS 4123:  Data analysis

Course description:   This course is a study of concepts across the span of life specific to the care of the individual who is acutely or critically ill and the impact that illness has on the individual’s family. Previously learned concepts addressing health promotion, nutrition, elimination and exchange, activity and rest, perception and cognition, self-perception, role relationships, sexuality, coping and stress tolerance, life principles, safety and protection, comfort, and growth and development are integrated throughout the course using the nursing process to plan and evaluate nursing care of the acutely or critically ill individual.

 

 

Students are expected to be self-directed in the acquisition of nursing knowledge.  Learning activities available to students include:

 

1. Classroom activities (NURS 4803): Information relevant to each unit of study will be presented in class. Students should come to class prepared to participate using the various sources identified as course text/reference books or on-line sites.

 

2. Readings: Assigned readings are essential for each concept/unit of study.  Content included in assigned readings may not necessarily be discussed in class but will be testable material!

 

4. Desire 2 Learn (D2L) supplement is available for announcements, questions, and discussions.

Students are expected to check D2L daily for course announcements.

 

5.The Elsevier/Evolve website is an on-line site available for extra study materials.  http://www.evolve.elsevier.com/Lewis/medsurg provides student resources specific to the course text.

 

6.  Evolve HESI patient reviews, case studies and RN practice quizzes/tests are available for your use.  Don’t forget to use your Evolve course code:  1983_rlockhart4_0011 to access this on-line information.  Completing the Practice Test exam at this site is a required component of this course.

Grades will not be rounded to the next highest score.

Students will be held responsible for lecture/discussion content, all assigned readings, and audiovisual materials on written exams.  When the lecture material is more current than the textbook, lecture material takes precedence.

Grading Criteria

Unit/Final Exams (Unit exams worth 13% each and Final Exam worth 15%= 80% of total course grade)

 

One hour will be provided to complete each unit exam.  Each unit exam will be comprised of 50 multiple choice questions and will be worth 100 points. 

A 2 hour timeframe will be provided for the computerized Evolve comprehensive medical/surgical exam during final’s week.  This exam will be comprised of 55 multiple choice questions and will be worth a total of 100 points.

Medication Dosage Calculation Quizzes (Quiz average= 5% of total course grade)

 

During each exam administration, twenty minutes will be allotted for completion of a medication calculation assessment.  Each  medication dosage calculation assessment will consist of five (5) mathematical problems to calculate and each quiz will be worth 25 points. At the end of the semester, this quiz average will be factored into the course grade.(The Wilson SON dosage calculation competency for this course states:  Students must score an average of at least 85% on calculation quizzes administered throughout the course.  Failure to do so will result in failure of the course.)

Students should bring a laptop computer and a four-function calculator to the course exams/dosage calculation assessments. You may not use your cell phone, PDA, programmable or statistics calculator during exams. Only four-function calculators will be allowed. Students may not share calculators.

 

MISSED EXAMS

 

If a student is to be absent from an exam, he/she must notify the course instructor at least two

hours prior to the exam.  Failure to comply with this policy will result  in an "0" for the exam.

Make-up exams may be constructed differently from the unit test.  The student must email, or

call, the course faculty to  schedule a make-up exam.

 

 

Nursing Process  (Care Plan) Assignment  (10% of course grade)

 

Using the care plan from NURS 3853 (Concepts in Caring for the Adult Client) as a point of reference, develop an updated care plan, using the steps of the nursing process, for Mrs. James of the Neighborhood, focusing on her situation and health issues discussed in Season 2.  Use the client database and nursing care plan forms posted on D2L for completing this assignment.

 

            1.  Start with performing a new client assessment by completing the database form.  This

            information can be found in Mrs. James’ weekly stories and in her biographical information.

 

            2.  After completing the database on Mrs. James, then list and prioritize her current problems (in

            Season 2) on the “Problem List”, then identify at least three nursing diagnoses for her.

 

            3.  Write at least one client goal for each nursing diagnosis and two expected/desired client

            outcomes for each identified goal .

 

            4.  List nursing interventions/activities needed to assist the client in meeting outcomes and

            goals.

 

            5.  Write evaluation statements as to whether each desired outcome and goal were met,

            partially met, or not met and why (Use the weekly stories in Season 3 to determine the outcomes.)

 

This assignment will be posted in the course Drop Box labeled Care Plan Assignment by midnight on Friday,  February 21, 2014.

 

The care plan will be graded using the rubic posted for this assignment in the “Course Content” section on D2L.

 

PrepU NCLEX 10,000 Mastery (5% of total course grade)

 

Students will answer PrepU NCLEX 10,000 practice questions.  A comprehensive score, worth 5% of the final course grade, will be earned based on the mastery level each student achieves in answering the PrepU questions by the last day of classes.  The grading rubric for the PrepU Mastery Score will be as follows:

 

            Mastery Score of greater than 3.6 = 100 points (100%)

            Mastery Score of 3.6 = 90 points (90%)

            Mastery Score between 2.5 and 3.5= 85 points (85%)

            Mastery Score between 2.0 and 2.4 = 80 points (80%)

            Mastery Score of  less than 2.0 = 74 points (74%)

            Did not access PrepU practice questions = 0 points (0%)

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Late Paper Policy

Late papers/assignments will be accepted, but for each day they are late, five points will be deducted from grade .

Although attendance is not required, students are encouraged to attend all classes. Students are expected

to come to class dressed in an appropriate manner which reflects professionalism.

Other Policies

Failure Policy/Cheating Policy:

 

 A student who receives a "D" or lower in an ACCEL-RN course will not be permitted to continue in the accelerated BSN program.  In the event of course failure, the student may contact the BSN coordinator for consideration in enrolling in the 28-month prelicensure BSN program.

 

The faculty reserves the right to recommend to the Program Chairs, Graduate Coordinator, Department Chair, and College Dean withdrawal of a student from the nursing program for health, legal, or academic reasons, particularly if patient care is jeopardized.  In addition, the student must perform within the ANA standards of practice and code of ethics.

If student performance falls below acceptable standards of practice, then the student will NOT successfully complete the clinical component of this course.  Certain aspects of these standards directly relate to safety in patient care and professionalism in practice.  If student performance drops below the standard in these two areas, then the possibility of successful completion of the clinical component of the course is unlikely.  The faculty recognizes that the issues of patient safety and professional standards cannot be compromised; therefore, any student who does not meet these standards will immediately receive a failing clinical evaluation.  The severity of these infractions warrants immediate failure of the clinical component of this course. The ANA standards of practice and code of ethics are posted in the Undergraduate and Graduate Student Handbooks.

Behaviors that detract from the learning process will not be tolerated. Tardiness will not be tolerated. Excessive talking to classmates during class time will not be tolerated. Beepers and cellular phones should be turned off during all class sessions. Text messaging during lectures is considered unacceptable behavior.  Children are not to be brought to class per University policy. Students who demonstrate distracting behaviors will be asked to leave the classroom. If a student demonstrates continuing behaviors that are distracting to his/her classmates, the student will be administratively dropped from the course IAW the 2012-2014 MSU undergraduate catalog, page 76, which reads:

 

            Instructor Drop. An instructor may drop a student any time during the semester for

            excessive absences, for consistently failing to meet class assignments, for an indifferent

            attitude, or for disruptive conduct. The instructor must give the student a verbal or written

            warning prior to being dropped from the class. An instructor’s drop of a student takes

            precedence over the student-initiated course drop of a later date. The instructor will assign

            a grade of either WF or F through the 8th week of a long semester, the 6th week of

            a 10 week summer term, or the 11th class day of a 4 or 5 week summer term consisting

            of 20 days. After these periods the grade will be an F. The date the instructor drop form

            is received in the Office of the Registrar is the official drop date

Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
