Course Objectives

1. To introduce you to the visual arts through the study of the artists who create the art, the context of works of art, art history, the creative process, studio techniques, principles of  design, elements of art, etc.;

2. To encourage your acquisition of the proper vocabulary for communication of these aspects of the visual arts;

3. To introduce you to selected works of art;

4. To stimulate your interest in a continued program of self education in the visual arts in the pursuit of a higher quality of life;

5. To allow you experience accessing information from a variety of sources, i.e. textbook, discussions with others, internet, etc.


Course Expectations
  1. 3-5 Multiple choice and short answer exams including the final exam. There will be an in class review and/or handout before each test. You can get a copy of the instructors PowerPoints if you bring a flash drive to class.
  2. Self-portrait collage using images that reflect interests, characteristics, etc. of you, the artist!
  3. Other possible assignments will be announced as necessary.
  4. Attendance, attention, and participation can affect your grade. “In class” projects may be used to add to a participation grade. Excessive absences may result in the lowering of your grade or of you being dropped from the class.

Grading Standards

The final grade will be an average of the test exams, the self-portrait collage and the in class participation grade. (Other assignments may be added during the semester.)

Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
